Owner description: Natural Splendor along the Swatara.Like many caverns in the Mid-Atlantic states, Indian Echo Caverns is a limestone cave. Cut through Beekmantown limestone, which is over 440 million years old, they were formed through the erosive properties of water. As time progressed, geological forces led to an "uplift" of the surrounding limestone, eventually allowing more and more water to flow through the formation. As the water flowed over the limestone, it began to create small crevices, these small crevices led to larger ones, and eventually, over a series of millions of years, it created the caverns as they are today. The temperature inside the caverns is 52 degrees year around.

I was a child when I last saw this cavern, and I took my kids this time. What a sight! Beautiful as always, and my favorite part, Crystal Lake was still there to see. Tour guide was a hoot!

We happened to get here early in the morning and got the first tour of the day. There are a lot of steps to go down to get to the cavern, but it is so worth it. The caverns are cool which is nice on a hot day. The tour guide we had was very informstive. She shared many stories and gave us plenty of time to admire the sites. Such incredible beauty was all around us as we walked thru the caverns. They also have a small area with animals and a gift shop. The grounds are very clean. The restrooms are one of the cleanest I have seen. Defiantly worth the trip.

Considering the guide kept asking, "Do you have any questions about...", we expected him to have some knowledge - we were wrong. His reply was simply, "I don't have an answer for that!"
Since the cave paths are narrow and ONE WAY in - same way out, they need to separate the tours more since we ended up pushed against rock formations we were told not to touch. This was in order to make room to allow different sized people to pass and allow our group to continue - poor planning on someone's part. Made it feel like they were grabbing at every opportunity to make the dollars. The cavern is lovely and very beautiful to enjoy. Plenty of parking and bathroom facilities were nearby.

What a beautiful cave system!!! VERY knowledgeable & friendly tour guide. The 45 minute tour was worth it! The grounds are beautifully kept. The gift shop was exceptional! My kids also REALLY enjoyed panning for their gemstones. A very nice informative place for a family to visit. Worth the drive from Hanover, where we were staying.
