“Dirty, Dingy, and Disappointing. How can this be rated #1?!??”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2012

I am Chinese and live and work in Asia & China in the hospitality industry. I know that a 5-star China hotel is barely a 4-star by international standards. I expected more from this US$122 (768 RMB) per night hotel. I have stayed in 200 RMB converted police dormitories in Inner Mongolia that were nicer. I have never been so disappointed by a hotel and Tripadvisor ratings.

I moved out after the 1st night and into a true 5-star for US$6 more (798 RMB per night). Stay at the Empark Grand (Block A) instead. 1-year old, next to a golf course, better river view, and SO MUCH NICER.

I booked this hotel because of the reviews and because the rate was considerably higher than other hotels in town.

The hotel looks good from the outside, but that's where it ends. I checked in at around 9pm and was walked across the dark parking lot to the "4-star" wing and the room was very small, dark, and dingy. Furniture and sheets looked very worn and dirty. No desk and no way to brighten the room. Bed was rock hard. The bathroom had "mini-bar" with all sorts of cheap male and female sexual aids (condoms, his/hers lotions, disposable underwear, etc. - enough said. I immediately went to the lobby and said that this room was unacceptable. This was a 2-star China room at best.

I was shown a pretty large twin room in the "5-star" main building which was much bigger and had a river view and had a desk. The manager on duty offered the room to me for the night, but said that he would need to adjust the rate the next day (US$208 / 1,300 RMB!!!) The furniture was also old, but looked cleaner than the old wing. No sexual aids. Carpet was newer, but stained in parts. Shower stall leaks. There is a small flat screen TV in the room, but it is not sized properly for the room- too far from the bed to be watched. Manager said that the wifi doesnt really work, but the wired network connection was sufficient to immediately book a room at another hotel.

After 10pm, they turn off all of the public area lights (hallways, lift lobbies, etc.) Feels extremely unsafe.

Budget Chinese breakfast buffet was in included in the rate. Worthy of a 300 RMB hotel. Very unappealing. I left as soon as I could.

Also, online booking websites show that there is a fitness center. No fitness center exists.

One positive: I was not charged a penalty for canceling my second night.

Room Tip: Book at the Empark Grand Hotel. Use eLong. No credit card required.

I did not stay in the main 5-star hotel part. I stayed in the 4-star hotel annex. Wonderfully big rooms. It was like being in a studio apartment without the kitchen. Two bottles of free filtered water included but they were glass, not plastic. Nice a/c. Has a nice desk and nightlight in the hall. Beds are a nice size but are hard. Breakfast is one of the worst I have encountered. Breakfast staff speaks no English. The hotel is very close to one of the main shopping streets mostly owned by Pakistanis and Burmese. Has some nice handicraft stores as well as small grocery stores.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the courtyard entrance. You will be delighted with a colorful light s...

This hotel is beautiful. Large rooms, nicely furnished. Centrally located, you can walk to the Jade Market, farmers market, parks and the area of town where the westerners hang out. Most of the staff does not speak English, but will gladly find someone who does. Our room had a beautiful view of the New Bridge over the Mekong, it was especially pretty at night all lit up.
