“Beautiful view, paper thin walls, overpriced”
Reviewed 12 May 2014 via mobile

La Estacion may have been the nicest place we stayed at in San Juan del Sur, but even as nice as it was, it was not worth what we paid for it.

We booked an online reservation and when we got there the lady had no clue what we were talking about. We had to pay more than what we originally agreed on for a smaller room with one bed. The room did have an amazing view, but with those large glass doors and paper thin walls you could hear everything out on the street. On the second night there was a concert at the bar across from the hotel and it kept us up until 3 A.M.

It is a beautiful, overpriced, loud hotel. I do not recommend staying here even though it looks good.

This is a very nice, clean, fairly modern hotel right in the heart of things in San Juan del Sur. Our rrom on the third floor was clean, bright, comfortable and with cable TV and free internet. Free breakfast at a restaurant along the waterfront is included in the room rate so it's a fairly good deal, even though the hotel is a bit pricey. The front desk is often unattended so the hotel has somewhat of a "sleepy" feel. The location could not be better to prowl the waterfront restaurants and take advantage of the many happy hours special being offered.

We stayed here for three nights. The room was just renovated, so it was modern and nice. The staff were friendly (although they could be better in English) and the cleaning ladies did an exemplary job. The hotel has a great location, next to the beach and near the city center. Unfortunately the hotel pool was a small indoor pool, so we never used it.

For the price and the view, we could not have done better. Free breakfast at the hotel across the street - options including American, Nicaraguan, Continental with coffee and small juice is a good value. The room we were given (slow season) was third floor for the best ocean view, very large (one king and one full sized), large walk in shower bathroom, balcony (shared with one neighbor, so make sure you lock the balcony door). We walked out the balcony and saw the full curve of the beach and bay. Probably would have had a smaller room, and not ocean view in the busy season. But I always like ocean view.

The bads - which is both good and bad - the guardian tried too hard to get us to use his friend the taxi. While it is always good to use a taxi service known by the hotel owner, asking us several times is too much. I know that is how they earn a little bit, procuring trips and taxis... but we like to be left alone unless by casual encounter. We did use his taxi friend, which cost an extra 5 bucks to Masaya, but it was worth it, than using a street taxi. Probably safer. The pool was closed due to remodeling, and likely will be reopened in 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the pace of the plastering and painting.

The bads - which can be fixed easily - is that we should have two hand towels and not one. We should also have towel racks - which we didn't, so we hung the towels on the balcony, which gives the hotel a dirty image, and the wind, strong and changing during the days - knock it off the balcony. Due to the strong ocean wind, there were few mosquitos. We did have one in the bathroom. The location is perfect - 2 blocks away from the ocean is the market and bus station, where you can buy cheap fruits, great melons, and personal items. You are 1 block from a massage place that was rated well, which we did not use (30 bucks for a 1 hour deep massage). About 3 blocks from the laundry block (about 4 places that offered laundry service, some within 1 hour), 4 blocks from a small quaint catholic church, and of course, few hundred feet from the beach, and dozens of ocean front restaurants. In the morning, a man pull a cart down the road and offered coconut juice from nuts in his cart for less than 1 buck... yummy. The restaurant all offered the same type of dish, but stay away from the fried tilapia. They are not that good to begin with, and from the polluted lake nicaragua. Eat the red snapper, or pargo. Cost a little more, but great tasting. The price here is a little higher than Managua, but for 250 to 350 cordobas, you can have a great meal. Don't forget to book zipline and horseback riding. We did the zipline at 3 pm, and horseback riding for 1 hour from the ranch back to the hotel at 5 pm. Beautiful cool afternoon breeze, and arriving at hotel just at sunset riding through the waves. All for 45 bucks per person (booked at a local travel place 1.5 blocks away, just near the market). I think all the local "travel" places offered the same activities... at the same ranch. But we had a great zipline adventure that lasted over 1 hour, and sliding down 12 different zip lines. A little dangerous, but a great experience.

I had a 3rd floor room with a good view of the beach. However, the balcony was shared by all other 3rd floor guests and the stairs were narrow and steep. The service was average at best and the main desk was often left unattended permitting anyone to enter and walk up to the rooms

Stayed 3 nights at this hotel. Besides its location, nothing else is good.
In particular, the windows (as well as the door) provide NO sound insulation at all, so every sound (and I mean EVERY sound) of the street, including the steps of people walking, will be distinctly heard in the room, making it impossible to rest, let alone to sleep... and believe me, that area of San Juan del Sur is really noisy during almost the whole night...

It seemed kind of appropriate that this hotel was named in honour of a railway that no longer exists, because it certainly seemed to be living on past glories when I stayed there for three nights this month.

Granted, the location is superb. It's right in the heart of San Juan Del Sur, with a restaurant fronting onto the beach, but I thought it was way too expensive, considering
a/ my Nicaraguan breakfast included raw / uncooked rice
b/ the pool was filthy, tiny, and closed for 'renovations'
c/ the wi-fi was the worst I've experienced in Central America
d/ the toilet did not flush
e/ the shower was erratic.

I know SJDS can be more expensive than other locations in Nicaragua, but La Estacion was not worth the price.
