“Worst experience in Nicaragua”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Within the past 4 years I have tried numerous restaurants in Nicaragua. Meson Español is said to be one of the good places. Unfortunately they managed to serve me the worst dinner I have had within this country yet. Even though they are said to be one of the decent places.
We ordered appetizers - chorizo, gambas and pulpo gallego. The chorizo was fine. The pulp did not resemble typical pulpo gallego at all. It was squid with red pepper on top served on potatoes. The potatoes were half raw and uneatable.
The gambas where awful. Completely dry and impossible to free them from their skin. Apparently they had suffered freezer burn or the like.
For main course we had paella. This was eatable. But not especially good either.

Above all the manager did not react very well to our criticism and was complaining about difficulties of food import to Nicaragua.
Just don't put that kind of food on your menu then. There is plenty of good product to be bought in Nicaragua.

At any comedor at the market they serve better food than at this "fancy" and expensive restaurant in San Juan del Sur.

And with Spanish cuisine this stuff did not have any resemblance.

“Horrible experience”
Reviewed 31 March 2014 via mobile

We planned our last dinner in San Juan del Sur to be special, so we chose the Meson. Boy were we disappointed. The root of the problem was the very slow service, and I actually think it was the kitchen falling behind. We waited with small children very long time to receive out appetizer - tapas. First we got the side salads to the dinner, really? elegant restaurant .... Other party came much later and received the appetizers much earlier. After my child felt asleep at the table I questioned the waiter what is going on, although he apologized and seemed sincere it did not speed the service.
Finally good arrived - grilled lobster good choice, corvina in capper sauce a bad one - the fish came without sauce only to remind the waiter that we ordered the other kind of the fish, and sauce came on a separate dish ( it was way too salty) the fish was not even cooked in it.
Bottom line - our last dinner was ruined by this restaurant and we will never eat there again.

“Good Entrees, veggies need work”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Four of us dined there last night, two of us had steaks which were tender and cooked as ordered. One had the grilled fish and the fourth had a chicken breast covered in a mushroom sauce. All were satisfied with our entrees, but each came with veggies that lacked any flavor. No one ate more than a couple of bites. You do get a choice of potato salad or green salad and both were fine. Also, the potatoes were fine as well. Just a shame the chef can't do something to improve the veggies.

“Best steak in town”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

We went to this restaurant twice during our visit San Juan. The food was incredible. The steamed clams in garlic was amazing, but beware because it is so fresh it is hot hot hot. The New York steak is the best in town. Yes even better than El Colibri. Our waiter both times was Rodolfo and he was great. Last night we had a large group with a few separate bills. He was organized, efficient, and very attentive.
The only minor negative is the food is a bit salty. However, for myself I don' mind. And because they are so accommodating I am sure they would try and adjust for you.
This is a restaurant we will definitely come back to. Definitely two thumbs up from my family.

“Cleanest nmost Modern Place on the Beach”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

I just wanted to try this place because it looks go good. I had the Spanish Salami appetizer and a beer. Great view of the beach, I saw a friend on the beach and invited him up for a beer and a share in my appetizer. It was about 8 slices of bread, butter and about one sixteenth of an ounce of the salami, or 12 paper thin slices an inch in diameter. Really great little snack and it was only 340 cords for 2 beers and the salami, tip and tax included. If you have a special guest to impress bring them here, bring plenty of cash and enjoy.
