Playa Hermosa Beach Hotel
Reviewed 6 March 2013

I've stayed here at this hotel/hostal a couple times now, and have enjoyed it very much. It is really off the beaten track, however still close enough to SJdS that you don't feel totally isolated. The beach here "Playa Hermosa" (beautiful beach in Spanish.).....really is one of the nicest beaches I've seen in Nicaragua. It's a large beach, approximately 3km if you were to walk the entire way end to end. Although it is not recommended you walk far away from the buildings, as there have been some issues in the past with robberies. I felt very safe the entire time I was there with my husband and another couple. This beach is considered to be one of the best surfing beaches in Nicaragua, and we watched several good surfers tackle some pretty huge waves! The ocean was a little cooler this year than I remember, however the weather in this part of the country has been sort of "different" this year. As with many of the beaches in Nicaragua you need to be aware of stingrays close to the shore. My husband got stung, and so did a few other people during our stay. Just remember to shuffle your feet when you enter the water, and that gets the rays moving out of your way! There has been a lot of development in the last year ,with several palapas on the beach and a little "beach bar". We rented the top floor ocean view rooms, and for $45.00 per night breakfast was included. It is very quiet most nights after 8:00pm, and you are lulled to sleep by the sound of the crashing waves. One of the highlights of our most recent stay was the sunset release of about 100 baby Olive Ridley turtles ! Playa Hermosa has a "turtle rescue" program, where they aquire turtle eggs from various locals?? The eggs are carefully guarded in a turtle hatchery, and after 42-45 days they are safely released into the sea. It was a wonderful, heartwarming experience that everyone should try to do at least once! (There are also horses available for rent $12.00) per hour. I'm sure I'll be back several times before I have to leave Nicaragua :-)

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms on the top floor are the nicest. All have mosquito nets and private bath

Beautiful spot. Allows you to catch really early waves and walk the blackened beach by night. Really depends on what you're looking for. When we stayed in 2011/2012, there were few others so the nights were wonderfully peaceful and quiet. Infrastructure is fairly basic and unless you bring your own food, you're eating what they make in the restaurant... with coconut water and beers :)

If you are looking for a party, this isn't your place.

The Good:
Very cool rustic, cabin room on top floor, overlooking the beach. Bathroom and room were both clean and fine.

The beach is simply stunning. Great for people of all ages, especially kids. Tons of nature to investigate and great surf for beginners.

The restaurant serves good food and strong drinks, which is a huge plus for me!

The Bad: Mosquitoes and possibly bed bugs attached us all night. My wifes face the next morning was swollen and bruised. It was horrible. I slept outside on the porch the bugs were so bad.

Other than the bug problem, this place is incredible and I would highly recommend staying for a night.

On a positive note the beach is incredible. It is remote and worth the drive down isolated bumpy road as it is so beautiful. However, I would not stay at the "hotel" more like a bunk house. We traveled with 3 children and got bit all over. It took us 2 nights to figure out after nighttime bites and bloody sheets what it was. They would not credit us and you are at their mercy to get a ride into town (20 minutes). We heard from another couple they did change the beds after we left but the room is most likely infested. I am a nurse and have experience with bed bug bites and it was classic. Made for an itchy trip home and throwing a lot of stuff away!

Room Tip: don't sleep in #4 !!!

truly, this is te only case we have had on this issue. there is qa misunderstanding between BED BUGS AND MOSQUITOES OR ANY OTHER TROPICAL BUG OUTSIDE THE BEDS. This case had to do with bugs from the environment. a different case than bed bugs. Even with environment bugs, natural of tropical climates, we are trying to deal with them. it is difficult, but we are doing it. the case of these children was a little more difficult because they were very allergic. I understand their problem and are ashamed it happened in our place, but it could have happened anywhere.

This hotel/restaurant is the only place at Playa Hermosa. I have mixed feelings as it is a private beach (entrance fee $7 I think) so it is a typical story of taking away a piece of nature from the locals. But it is a nice and clean place to relax, surf, have a drink and spend the night.

During the day, the beach is pretty crowded with people coming in from San Juan for the day. They all leave around 5pm - and that is when you will have the beach almost to yourself.

The cooking crew leaves at 7pm, so your dinner should be ordered and finished a bit before that. There is not much more to do in the evenings other than have some drinks. Not many guests around at the time we were there. We went to bed very early.

The friendly guard will ask you at what time you can have the electricity turned off. So make sure to bring a headlamp.
We had one of the beachview rooms. Lovely open spaces, fell asleep by the sounds of the waves. And woke up from mosquito bites...make sure to close your net thoroughly.

In the morning you will have the beach to yourself, awesome experience. Breakfast is good.

They charged us $60 + tax for 3 persons in the room. The dorm bed are pretty expensive too.

One night here was awesome but wouldn't do it again. More fun in SJDS.

Room Tip: Take a beachview room

Took a long weekend trip here from San Juan del Sur, wanting to get out of the city. We had no problem emailing the hotel (communicated with Eduardo), setting up our reservation, and having the shuttle meet us in town, gratis, and punctual. The hotel is lovely, especially the private rooms. Large bathroom with good water pressure, lovely balcony overlooking the water, locking cabinets for your valuables/money (always lock your stuff, no matter what country you're in!). The king beds are actually two twin mattresses, which were *very* firm, but also very new. Clean sheets and towels provided. The mosquito net wasn't big enough for a king bed - definitely led to us wearing bug spray to bed - as we couldn't have a fan to blow away the bugs - there's no electricity here except for a few hours after sunset - but we couldn't hear the generator and had no issues with lights as did another reviewer. No electricity also means no internet - which for a few days really wasn't a problem..nice to get away. Although the website talks up the food like at a full service resort, everything is run out of the bar and through a tiny kitchen (which does have power, obviously) by the Nicaraguan workers - who are wonderfully nice and accommodating, but most speak very little English - bring your dictionary, patience and tranquilo attitude! As vegetarians, we were a little more aggressive in ordering "off the menu" (which is a surfboard over the bar) and getting in on some of what the workers were eating - beans and rice for example. Very delicious food, reasonable prices and breakfast is included in your room rate. We had a lovely time, tho we were kind of surprised by the rustic amenities that were glossed over on the website, but had wonderful friendly people there to help us and a gorgeous beach practically all to ourselves.

Room Tip: "Forest" view rooms actually face the parking lot, chose an "ocean" room if you...

Just returned home to NYC after spending the weekend on Playa Hermosa & feel like I left paradise behind!! Everyone was so friendly & accommodating - from the guys who transported us back & forth to town, everyone at the bar/restaurant where I ate the most delicious lunches, the amazing baby turtle release, & fun surf lessons with Saúl/San Juan Surf. Dreaming of a future visit & will definitely stay at hotel next time. Didn't stay overnight but checked out rooms & they were clean & spacious, & highly recommended by guests who stayed there. Muchas Gracias por todo!! ~Esperanza
