Three blocks from the ocean (just far back enough from the action for my taste) lies a gem of a hotel "Villa isabella". Nestled on a San Juan del Sur neighborhood street, one gets the true Nicaraguan experience as locals walk by on their way to work, school, or selling fresh fruits and vegetables. The home-style feel is accentuated by the owner Mike- he is an American (or Canadian?) who lives here full time and is a wealth of knowledge of the area. Attention to detail made my stay outstanding- the rooms are fully equipped and the in house restaurant is excellent. There is on site wireless internet (no charge) and a never ending supply of cold beer (oh yeah!). The icing on the cake is the generator that kicks on when the electricity goes out (a daily occurrence for three hours or more due to the national energy crisis) My buddies who were staying up the street ended up getting a room next to mine after a couple days of power outages. When I stayed there there were families, surfers, locals and travelers sharing their travel tales on the hotel's front porch. The mix of camaraderie, privacy, security, convenience and reasonable price make this my favorite hotel in Nicaragua!
