“Beautiful place”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

The place was beautiful. The beach was great. The waves were a little bit scary big for our small kids, but it was still a lot of fun. The staff was mediocre. They were very hard to get a hold of, since none seemed to stay on site. The guide was much more interested in playing with his girlfriend than being helpful. He did cook for us, which was nice, but he had a very hard time understanding and delivering on our requests. If you're into surfing and just relaxing, its a pretty awesome place. There are lots of seemingly random people there to surf, so even though we were the only guest, we were rarely alone. The facilities are really nice, but not kid friendly. I'm sure it would fit other people's needs far better than ours.

The retreat is beautiful and certainly away from any civilization. You wake up to the sound of waves and you go to bed and can watch lightning storms over costa rica. The nice thing is that there are kitchens you can use. The kitchen upstairs is shared with the staff so it was kind of weird sorting food in there...and having it rearranged to their liking in the morning. Also, they charge you for bottled water which is fine but when I see the staff filling up their bottles with the water I just purchased, I'm not impressed. They offer exta activities like fishing and surfing but make sure you ask how much beforehand because they don't tell you. If you plan on fishing, expect to push/pull the boat along the sand for about 180meters to the water. I didn't think that was fair considering we were actually paying for it.

Went fishing and it was super fun and the guide said he would help us clean and cook it when we were done and he did but he felt it was more important to flirt with the girls for about an hour and a half and then got a little pissy when I asked him if he could help us. Also took sweet time picking us up to drive to San Juan del sur. He was two hours later than he said he was going to be and we lost almost half a day waiting. Expect to help unload the truck too. Not impressed with how he spoke about the other people in our group either.

Make sure to bring food with you because a trip into town is a pain and takes longer than expected.

Other than that one staff member, everyone else was great and the place was a blast.

Hola Rory, Our apologies. Since your stay with us we have worked hard to address all your concerns. We no longer have a shared kitchen, and now provide delicious home cooked meals, this system is a great improvement as our guests now leave the sourcing of delicious fresh ingredients to us, and the kitchen is no longer shared. Bottle purified water is now curtesy of the hotel, guests and staff are free to stay hydrated. And lastly our fishing operator/driver is no longer working with us. Most people loved himm but his punctuality was not alway great and he was a hopeless flirt. That said we have some great people to fill his shoes, and they have proven to shine where failed. Hope to see you again some day.
Cheers

Staying at Costa Dulce full of adventure. Gonzalo, Francis, Sandra and Kit made it feel like an authentic home stay and was above and beyond what we expected. This place is off the beaten path (about 20-30 minutes up a dirt road from San Juan del Sur) and is a sanctuary for the natural habitat including turtles, dolphins, monkeys, sloths, frogs, reptiles, etc. There is something for everyone, including just relaxing and laying in a hammock or surfing, fishing, horseback riding (which was an adventure), zip lining, volcano tours, hiking, etc. Although we stayed in the "main house", each room is separated from the main house and feels like a bungalow. The views are breathtaking, the food was delicious and healthy, and our family had an authentic adventure we will always remember. We stayed with another family and had 5 children ages 9-15. This is an excellent place for a family retreat.

Thank you Tyson and Gonzalo. Our week at Costa Dulche was extra-ordinary. We basically had the beach to ourselves for the week. Our bungalow was really comfortable (particularly from the hammock) and we enjoyed cooking for ourselves and enjoying the super relaxed experience. It was a home away from home. Your place is not for the faint-hearted, but if one is ready for an authentic experience and can "rough it" just a little then this is the place to have a true Nicaraguan Adventure!

Room Tip: all rooms have a great view of the beach

We love this place, its super wild, whales, dolphins, fish, frogs, dogs, scorpions, birds, monkeys, stingrays and the most beautiful trees and cliffs and ocean and sunsets. ITs basically a private beach and another private beach up the coast in case you get sick of this one. Gorgeous yoga plat form, awesome casual vibe, you can cook your own food and chill with the staff, surf lessions, fishing trips, horse back riding massage, turtles! baby turtles. ITs wild in all the best ways possible, surfing is ridiculous - go surf here - stay here, be in nature, get away from it all, its safe and you canstill get to know some locals as many of them have a stake and help run this place.

Room Tip: The casitas are perfect for a couple but there are rooms with more beds for familys and groups. Thi...
