“Fantastic gem in this historic town”

My brother and I booked this beautiful house for 10 days in May. The house was clean and typically Tuscan, with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The garden was huge and stunning, with a barbeque area and beautiful terrace with amazing views across the Certaldo landscape.

The owners, Antonio and Laura were very hospitable and friendly. Antonio was born in the family home next door and still lives there. Certaldo Alto itself is a beautiful, unspoilt little town with lots of history attached to it. There are several very good restaurants (we personally recommend De Messer Boccacchio which serves amazing food and wine. We dined there most nights and it is very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. There are also a couple of bars and gift shops, and the old palace (now a museum) is well worth a visit. There is a funicular railway running down the hill to the main town which has lots of shops, a large modern supermarket and a train station, from which you can catch a train to Florence, Siena and other places.

As we hired a car for the duration of our stay, we were able to travel around parts of Tuscany visiting Florence, Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Livorno, Vinci, the Chianti trail and many other places. The views on our drives were breathtaking wherever we went.

I have to say that this was one of the best, most peaceful holidays we have had in an absolutely fabulous location. I cannot recommend it highly enough and we are hoping to return to Il Vecchio Forno within the next couple of years.

“Spacious Apartment in Charming Hill Town”
Reviewed 7 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

My wife and I stayed at Il Vecchio Forno for 8 days in April-May 2015. The apartment sits almost at the top of the main street of Certaldo Alto, a small, and apparently relatively undiscovered, medieval hill town west of Florence. Both the town and the apartment were charming and very much met our expectations.

The owners, Antonio and Laura, were very hospitable, and very nice. Antonio speaks a little English, while Laura speaks none; we were nonetheless able to understand one another well enough to get along quite nicely. Antonio was born in Certaldo Alto and seems to know everyone in town.

The apartment has two good-sized bed rooms, a sizable dining/living room, a dressing/sitting room and kitchen. The bathroom was modern and comfortable. The apartment shares the owners' remarkable back yard, which is about 50 yards deep and ends at the medieval wall that surrounds Certaldo Alto. It was very comfortable for the two of us and would likely be fine for a family of four.

The apartment shares the owners' washing machine. There is no dryer; we made do with the owners' plastic drying rack.

Certaldo Alto itself is rather quiet; for us, that was part of its charm. There was always room at any of the restaurants; Il Messer for cracker crust pizza and La Antica Fonte, with a lovely outdoor patio were particular favorites. The Palazzo Pretorio museum (the fortress at the top of the main street) was worth a visit. Certaldo Alto was the home of Giovanni Boccaccio, the author of The Decameron; his 14th century family house is a museum that is also interesting.

If you have a car, Certaldo is also a good base for day trips to Greve in Chianti, San Gimignano, Montereggioni, Siena, Montalcino and Montepulciano.

Overall, we would enthusiastically recommend Alto Certaldo in general and Il Vecchio Forno in particular. Grazie, Antonio and Laura.

“The perfect Tuscan stay”
Reviewed 5 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

A beautiful two bedroom property with a double and twin room, kitchen, bathroom and 2 living rooms. The name means the Old Bakery and in the living room is a big old cooker as testiment to that fact. The property was spotless and very comfortable. It is beautifully decorated making it feel like the real Tuscan home it is. There are no words for how superb the garden is. Panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and 2 outside tables for you to choose your outside eating spot or simply snooze on one of the loungers.

Antonio and his wife, Laura, are incredibly friendly and utterly wonderful hosts. Antonio kindly picked us up from the station and as they live next door we often bumped into them in the village. They had left brochures and information in the apartment as well as books on the local area so you could really make the most of your stay.

Certaldo Alto has to be one of the bext locations to stay. The walled medieval village atop a hill gives fantastic views around and contains a couple of museums, local ceramic gallery and several restaurants. The Funicular down the hill to the new townis only €1.50 return and saves your legs although the walk is only 10 minutes (but steep!). In the new town is an array of shops, bakeries, cafes and most of all train station which is halfway on the Florence - Siena line. So convenient for visiting each city and other nearby towns such as San Gimignano. Warning though, you cannot get to Chianti from here without a car. The Castellina in Chianti train station is actually 10km from Castellina. However, with gorgeous walks from Certaldo Alto itself and local wine on offer, you do not miss out on much.

I had the perfect holiday here with my mum and would love to return, hopefully soon. I can't recommend this property or the town highly enough!!

“Outstanding accomodations, excellent location, and gracious Hosts!”

This is a fabulous Apartment--- which reflects its Tuscany focus. The loaction in Certaldo Alto is exceptional: right in the village, services very close by, and all you will enjoy in a small Tuscan Mountain Village. The apartment has everything you will need--- we especially enjoyed the outside dinging area, overlooking the Tuscan vistas. Our Host Antonio and his wife were wonderful--- showed us around the area, including the Farmers Market on Saturday. Certaldo also has GREAT train access to Sienna and ancient villages, as well as Florence--- which are all within an Hours or so. We found it IDEAL as a location, and especially since we did not want to rent a car. The restaurants close by are alos superior--- and since Certaldo is NOT touristy per se, you can enjoy local foods, including the best pizza you will have ever tasted! Finally, the apartment facilities, decor, etc. are of exceptional quality---and there were 4 adults in our party--- and Antonio stocks some local wine for a very exceptional price to you. Enjoy!

Liked best: The setting was very special, with Tuscan views, and right within ancient Certaldo.
Liked least: Internet service was sketchy at times--- but availble close by in area businesses. NOT a big problem.
