“Friendly Staff, great location in Tuscany”
Reviewed 14 June 2013

As part of our Motogp experience we spent 12 nights here. All the staff were really friendly, but special thanks to Claudia, Elena, and Irene, who went above and beyond in making us welcome! Close to most of the towns we wanted to visit, and no problems with using the recommended local car hire company for a few days.
Certaldo Alto can be reached the Funicular and is just amazing!
Only one negative, no kettle or tea making facilities in the room as part of the standard cost.
Mike and Julia

Room Tip: ask for a corner suite on the second floor.

We found the reception staff to be genuinely friendly, helpful and interested in what we had been doing. It was a pleasure to walk through the hotel doors knowing a warm welcome awaited.
The location was easy to find as we cycled into town, and it was a short walk to the funicular up to Certaldo Alto, as well as the main restaurant area.
Room 104 was well laid out, with a small foyer where we could keep our luggage and shoes so the bedroom stayed uncluttered. There was also sufficient desk space for us to spread out all our documents such as guidebooks, postcards and cycling paraphernalia. The bed was huge and comfortable, and the bathroom very spacious. We loved the exposed beams in the ceiling. Together with the river rushing under our room, these features reminded us that this was a converted mill. One night we left the top of the window open and enjoyed the cool air and sound of running water.
My husband was pleased to find a small fitness room where he could stretch out after a day's cycling. The small pool would be great for cooling off on hot days.
The variety of breakfast items was more than adequate to refuel us for another day's activities. There was no restaurant for dinner but this was not a problem as there were plenty to choose from within walking distance, as well as some lovely options in Certaldo Alto.
Overall it was a comfortable, friendly and stylish hotel.

This is a beautiful hotel, in a perfect location to visit Tuscany (close to S Dominigniano, in the triangle between Siena, Florence and Pisa). The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, they gave us good tips on local restaurants. The rooms were spacious, clean, fresh and luminous, the bed was big. We got a good discount as a pre-paid stay, and it was during off peak season (January).

Certaldo village was forced to us because all other choices were full during a long weekend for entire Europe. So if you have to stay in Certaldo, this is probably your best bet. It is not however an ideal Tuscany holiday destination. Hotel is an ok refurbished old building. Rooms and bathrooms are acceptable and clean; it lacks the minimum level of charm you would expect from a Tuscany hotel claiming to be "good". Breakfast is also acceptable, nothing special though.

We were travelling with our 6 mnth old baby first time. Landed to Bologna and when we arrived to Certaldo at around 11 pm, she was asleep for some time and sweated. My wife, eager to take her bed right away, grabbed her walked in to the hotel. Receptionist was expecting to meet us. My wife explained the situation and kindly asked the key immediately to take the baby up to the room. It was chilly, she was warm out of the car. Receptionist insisted on getting our passports. I negotiated my way to the key after few minutes of debate. I was still forced to sign some papers for the room which we had already paid in full, with no-refunds possibility, to get the key.

We had requested a baby crib. There was a crib in the room. No mattress. I went down to the reception to ask for one. There was a different person who said there was none and asked for passports again. I said "please solve my babies problem first" and he said "no, i need the passports". Then the first receptionist came and insisted on passports as well. Having understood that there was no baby mattress in the hotel i started to walking back to the room. First receptionist forced her way with me to the room, insisting on getting the passports. As we walked in, my wife was designing a mattress using our bed's pillows and bath towels, which worked well for our 4 day stay.

Of course, receptionist - under those circumstances, without feeling any embarrassment got our passports and walked out. Getting new towels and pillows required some more effort. Yes, i know, we should have left; but, where with a baby. Besides we flew from Istanbul, our friends flew from Luxembourg. Both our friends and us are seasoned travelers, so we learnt to overlook minor! matters.

Then small stuff; one morning there happened to be another baby guest at breakfast room, and guess what they have only one baby chair. This is not a 5 room bed and breakfast. So we shared it with other guest.

Once my wife asked for a warm glass of water to prepare something for the baby; 5 Euros ! While paying the extras during checkout i politely mentioned, and received a "thank you" reply.

Then, there is a list in the room;

Slippers Euro 6
Bathrobe Euro 6
Coffe machine Euro X
etc.

and the list goes on. Got the management style?

Anyhow, there were few good people in the hotel of course, and I would like to thank them. In addition we ate in Certaldo few times and people we met were great.

As a seasoned traveller, though, I do not like this cheap mindset particularly on holiday. And, Yes, we paid 15 Euro/day extra for the crib which costs no more than Euro 50.

We arrived tired and jaded after a busy week followed by the drive up from Rome, which was complicated by our satnav having a nervous breakdown because somebody had changed the roads (handy tip...update before you travel!)....but as soon as we walked into the reception area of the Hotel Certaldo, the evening began to improve. The space is large, calm and comfortably cool while the welcome is warm and friendly. Formalities were kept to a minimum and we were settled on a comfy sofa with a glass of wine to relax with till it was time to be shown to our rooms.
Ours was large and immaculate, with tall windows opening on to a balcony that gave us a good view as well as fresh air. The bed was a good size and very comfortable, the lighting could be altered to suit your mood, and the large ensuite shower room was sparklingly clean, with loads of hot water on demand.
The staff, though, were the best feature of the hotel....nothing was too much trouble for them and they all had the most amazing smiles, to make the tired traveller feel that life could be fun again! We were very pleased with the advice they gave us on places to eat and visits to make; the best of local knowledge mixed with friendly concern! It would be worth making a trip to Certaldo just for the boost they can give you by making you feel so welcome.
This is definitely a place to return to, again and again!

Room Tip: Our only small quibble would be that even in October it's not a good idea to sleep with open win...

Over all great value! Very clean room and linens. Breakfast was very well presented with plenty of variety and something for everyone. Made to order espressos and cappuccinos brings the morning up a notch.

Service is very kind and professional.

Great base to explore Siena and San Gimignano.

Only negatives - skylight windows were not properly cleaned (pigeon droppings); lots of mosquitoes in the area; quiet city, not much going on

We have stayed here twice now as part of our Motogp package and on both occasions we have been very happy with the very friendly and helpfull staff, the hotel itself is a converted water mill and stands well as you approach it, on both occasions we have been very pleased with our rooms which have overlooked the rear of the hotel, ie the river. Their isnt a proper resturant in the hotel just snacks and drinks. There is a number of resturants both in the hill top old town and around the town square at the bottom. Certaldo its self is nothing spectacular. The train station is 10-15 mins walk from the hotel with regular services to Siena and Florence and beyond..
