“Lovely meal”
Reviewed 8 February 2014 via mobile

Unlike the rather cutting review from a couple in January, we also purchased a Travelzoo posh fish & chips voucher and enjoyed a lovely meal. The fish was huge but light and moist with delicate crisp batter that wasn't greasy at all. The skin-on chunky chips were too good and the ham hock minted mushy peas were a delight. Our only complaint was that we were too full to try a dessert. The choice of wine by the glass was excellent. In summary, a delicious treat and we will be back to sample the a la carte.

“Impeccable service”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

I do not think I has seen such a seamless and smooth operation front of house anywhere before. Bar, waiting staff and management were amazingly in tune with one another. It was a real delight to have an alternative to less inspiring hotel food so close. Great Guinness!

“Do not eat here.Meal was disgusting”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

My Wife and I purchased a voucher off Travelzoo for Posh Fish and Chips with wine normally £20 a head ,offer was £10 A head. Nice looking Pub although quite cold once inside ,Nice Staff.
We had coffee instead of wine ,started off with hot buttered roll which was nice ,then it wet downhill, Picture on Travelzoo showed a plate with Fish on it and a half dozen or so "doorstep chips a dish with Tartare sauce and it looked like a salad but not sure. What turned up was a dish with Hamhock and Mushy peas that looked like something the Dog had bought up,The Fish batter was absolutely running in fat, although fIsh inside it was quite nice, about 30 greasy chips dumped on plate. My Wife who never complains called the Waitress over who got who we assume was the Manager, He took our plates back to kitchen and offered us something else or a sweet, we declined. He then offered us the voucher back to use again, having driven 24 miles for one lot of rubbish we weren't going to risk it again, he told us as we had used a voucher to obtain meal he could not give us a cash refund,.By the time we got home we were both feeling extremely queasy.

“Amazing”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

One of the finest meals I have eaten. Food was top quality, service was excellent, beer prices were a tad high, but reasonable for a restaurant. The atmosphere was friendly and inviting and the pictures on the wall make good reading if you, like me, love local history. The only negative thing about the place is the food is too good, but I shall be returning in the near future to sit next to the real wood burning fireplaces and tuck into that lovely Sea Trout. Spot on

“Very good presentation”
Reviewed 18 December 2013

On arrival for a business (but not Christmas) dinner we found the car park full, with many cars parked on the surrounding streets, and so we expected to find the Black Horse full of Christmas parties. However, we discovered that the largest group was already seated in a separate room, and there were plenty of seats in the bar area for a pre-dinner drink. The bar area was cosy and welcoming.

We had the choice of the usual a la carte menu, or a Christmas fixed price menu, and chose the latter as it offered a reasonable choice at a fair price. In addition to the usual turkey and Christmas pudding there were a number of more unusual alternatives e.g. a chocolate mandarin creme brulee. The food was good quality, but where the Black Horse excels is in presentation. We all enjoyed our food very much, and didn't feel rushed or pressured despite there being many Christmas revellers sitting around the restaurant. The service was attentive and good, with the only criticism being an error on the bill which was corrected quickly when pointed out.

It is a pub with accommodation, but the food is well above standard pub fare - although the price reflects that.
