“Nice cottage but too many wind farms.”

As soon as we arrived the owner told us the builders will be arriving the next morning to finish turning this detached property into 2 semidetached properties as their daughter is going to be living there. Not what you want to hear when you came away for a quiet break. Fortunately he saw sense and rearranged for them to come after our holiday. We booked this cottage because we have 2 big dogs, one of them elderly. Looking at an ordnance survey map we could see a footpath right down the side of the cottage and also a bridleway about 50 yards down the road as we need somewhere close to the cottage to walk them as the elderly dog struggles to get in and out of cars. I should mention the road past the cottage is like a race track for cars and motorbikes, some passing the cottage at over 100mph, so it is very dangerous to walk along with 2 dogs. The aforementioned footpaths no longer exist, no signs, gates or stiles either...so we tried the bridleway. The man in the first house along the bridleway had chained the gate and laid planks and ladders across the path to create some sort of obstacle course. This is illegal on a bridleway as it is for use by horses, bicycles and walkers. Makes you feel sort of unwelcome. Our elderly dog couldn't get over the barricades so we ended up going back to the house to take them somewhere in the car. We had to do this every day because we couldn't take them for a walk straight from the door. Not exactly the fault of the cottage owners, although they should look into why these paths are inaccessible, but just a heads up for anyone else booking this property and expecting to be able to walk with your dog from the door. As the road is very dangerous I also wouldn't recommend staying there if your dog is the curious/energetic kind that will squeeze through gates or hop over stone walls as that is all there is to keep them from this fast road. Never assume the gate is closed either as the owners gave a habit of turning up unnanounced too.

Can't fault the cottage asides from wifi signal not strong enough to work in the living room and the showers being very poor, with very little water pressure it was more like standing under a dribbling tap. It was however well equipped, clean and tidy. The upland views were spoiled by wind turbines everywhere you look and the hillsides were littered with eyesores. Compared to the dark peak area of the Peak District you will find this part of West Yorkshire is a lot less photogenic so we spent most of our time down in the valley walking round hebden bridge or over at Haworth where the scenery is a lot nicer.

We have stayed at many different dog friendly cottages in England and Wales and sorry to say this one comes bottom of the list. We won't be going back to this cottage again and especially as it is no longer detached or private with the owner living in the same building.

We are really sorry to hear that your holiday was affected at all, by the changes to Rough Top Cottage, it is our aim to make everyone’s stay at the cottage the very best we can. However, we did explain that the “detached” label had been removed from the site, 5 months ago, that you booked through and the marketing company were meant to write to anyone that had booked previously to explain the changes. On contacting the company, it appears they had not done that. The “building” work was all done in our closed winter season and the contractors due were simply kitchen fitters. Once we realised our guests would be unhappy at anyone being on site, we delayed their work and the guests were given a detached property with no interruptions for the duration of their 3 day stay.
We do not usually call unannounced but seeing as the guests were due to leave at the end of their 3 days stay and we had had a query from them we thought it only polite to visit and make sure they were happy with how we had resolved their dislike of anyone else going into the yard.
We have looked at the issue with the showers and being a remote country cottage with spring water the supply does occasionally give us slow water problems. The same can be said for the Wi-Fi which works well in the main room but due to the 400-year-old walls being particularly thick, this does prohibit the quality of the signal, again for a country cottage the signal is as good as you can expect.
We advertise as being dog friendly and do everything possible to make our guest’s dogs feel at home, with no extra charges to our clients. We even provide emergency dishes in case they forget the dog’s own. We provide a large yard with post and rail fencing with a smaller inner garden with post and rail and dry stone wall. Our fencing is to a minimum of 3foot high and we wouldn’t want to spoil the views by building fencing higher than this. We do not provide a dog cage or outdoor pen and our other guests have commented how safe and secure their dogs feel at Rough Top Cottage.
Unfortunately, some of your comments are out of our hands i.e. windfarms and bridleways. We cannot do anything about a dislike of wind turbines, but being situated on the tops on moorland makes us perfect windfarm country and the open scenery takes in miles and miles of views. The footpaths and bridleways are again out of our control but they have been reported to the authorities.
The road has a speed limit of 60 miles per hour and frankly we do not think anything could travel along it at 100 miles per hour. It is a winding, country road and does have sheep occasionally wandering and the majority of cars respect this.
We realise we can’t please every guest as much as we would like but hope that all find our cottage clean, fitted with everything you could require, with a friendly welcome and a home from home.

“Perfect getaway and wonderful walking right from the door.”
Reviewed 9 November 2016 for a stay in October 2016

The cottage is well tucked away has parking outside which is a binus in such a small village. Although I recommend reversing once you find the cottage to make getting out easier. The cottage itself is really well presented! The kitchen had everything we needed and the fresh bread was a bonus for the morning buttie. We walked direct from the cottage on to the Pennine Way and across Wadsworth Moor which was perfect for the dog. The cottage was nice and warm all weekend! We had a nice walk around Heptonstall on the Sunday and really loved the views.

“A great home from home in a fantastic location”
Reviewed 11 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

A lovely property with bags of character in a great location. It is a wee bit remote, but it's all the better for this and a great place to get away from everything, with the added bonus of breathtaking views to all sides.
Rough Top has everything you could need for a family holiday (there were 5 of us); big kitchen, large lounge, good size bedrooms, two nice bathrooms and plenty of space to play outside.
The house is warm, well appointed and has an open fire with plenty of coal and firelighters.
Great walks with scrambling on the rocks (Bridestones) right on your doorstep, plus plenty more walks on the tops around Hebden Bridge, Burnley and Todmorden. The area is perfect for mountain biking too.
Try the Ridge (Pack Horse) at Widdop (15 mins), White Lion in Heptonstall (10 mins) or Kettledrum (on the way to Burnley - 10 mins ) for great food and drink.
The owners were very friendly and left us a nice 'welcome pack'.
Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back.

“Fantastic 17th Century farmhouse with dramatic views”
Reviewed 14 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

If you want to get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in the rugged landscape of the Pennine Way and Bronte country you could not find better than Rough Top Cottage. The views are outstanding. The cottage is comfortable with a large farmhouse kitchen and relaxing living room. Everyone of us had the best nights sleep imaginable in the most comfortable beds we've slept in whilst on holiday. We wanted for nothing during our stay. It is hard to find such quality accommodation that will accept two large dogs - thank you Chloe.

“Wow! beautiful, clean family run house, incredible location”

The only problem I had with this house was leaving. We arrived in thick snow to the family owned house. The owners were amazing, they ensured our stay was a fantastic one. The house is an old farmhouse, built on beautiful surrounds. The tap water is fresh spring water, and the house itself is warm, safe and clean. The locals were great, offering us freshly laid eggs and milk. My husband and I with our two children aged 4 and 6 years booked the house to meet with family in the region, and as it was so beautiful, they all came and visited us and we were able to entertain thanks to the well equipped and spacious kitchen. Truly magical place with lovely people, comfy bedrooms and great value for money. We are already planning a re-visit to see the views in a different season.
