“Appalling, rude & arrogant manager”
Reviewed 29 April 2013

Beautiful looking pub in a great location which is completely let down by a manager who has a chip on his sholder and is dismissive of any of his customers opinions and problems. How he got the job is anyone's guess. I'm not surprised to see that several other people on trip advisor have complained about him. I shall not be returning to the pub ever again, which I think was the managers intention in the first place. He treats customers like they are problems.

We stayed here in 2008,; would love to come back. Everything was perfect, from the room, to the food, to the sound of sheep baaing in the early morning hours. The town of Ilkley itself is a gem, not far from Haworth and York, two of our destinations. We enjoyed ambling around Ilkley. And later, we could sit outside and eat a lovely curry dinner while gazing at the countryside, in particular, the Cow and the Calf rocks nearby.

If you prefer to stay at a real inn, rather than a cookie-cutter hotel, then this place is for you!

Room Tip: There is no elevator, so you will have to walk a few steps. It is worth it!

Visited for lunch Fri 12/04/2013 after brisk walk on the moor. Bar poorly manned, staff often on phone answering outside enquiries. Had to ask about food order after waiting 30mins, even though the restaurant was not busy. My partner & I had the beer-battered cod & chips - not bad fish though small inside the batter, sitting on a small bed of insipid chips direct from a bag in the freezer, accompanied by only a tablespoonful of mushy peas and a tiny paper pot of tartare sauce - and all this for 10.50 each! Shame really as the setting and premises are very good. we were thinking of visiting for a weekend break, but I don't think so now.

I have been to this restaurant 2-3 times over the last year and found the food to be excellent and the service is also very good. We have had to wait on occasion as the area is very popular with walkers but not more than maybe 20 minutes which is enough time to grab a drink from the bar.
Would recommend this place to everyone.

We just came for a meal, as The Cow and Calf is in such a great location.

We had beer battered mushrooms, which to be honest were absolutely delicious. The bar had a notice which said which cask conditioned beer was used in the beer batter which I thought was a really nice touch. When starter arrived the mushrooms were really crispy and tasty. They were served with a gazpacho mayonnaise which was very nice too, so up to that point things were looking good.

I ordered the lamb meatballs which were served on mashed potato and spinach. They looked good but when I chewed the meatball I found a small piece of bone, I removed it and tried another and found another 2 shards of bone. I sent the dish back and was offered a replacement dish, I ordered cheese crusted chicken, which apart from being a little dry around the edges, tasted quite nice.

It's a shame about the meatballs, because they spoiled what could have turned out to be a very pleasant meal.

It's a nice place, with good decor and homely open log fire which is very appealing on a cold day. If stay away from the bony meatballs, you could have a fairly nice meal.

We called in for a meal on Sat 6th before our walk over the moors. The welcome was warm and friendly and unhurried. We were given the menu and left to mull over our choices and the waiter only came when I asked, which in my opinion is great as you don't feel rushed and unwelcome. We were given the fixed price menu and the normal menu. We made our choices from the normal menu, which was very well priced and gave quite a good choice for a chain pub.We each chose Half roast chicken with lemon and garlic with seasoned chips and salad. We also had a side order of onion rings each. The wait was not over long despite it being busy. The food arrived well presented and with good sized portions. The only thing that let it down on presentation was the onion rings could have been drained longer to get rid of the oil plus smaller rings and maybe a choice of rings to share or a smaller portion for one. Service Brill, food Brill, atmosphere Brill.

Enjoyed our stay here. Warm room with skylight (number 16). Fairly small but clean. Good continental selection for breakfast with roaring log fires and lovely views down the valley - and hares in the beer garden!
Check in staff could have been a bit friendlier but all in all enjoyed our stay.
