“Very picturesque!”
Reviewed 9 August 2008

We enjoyed our stay at the Cow and calf very much. The old house with the magnificent views over the moore and the rocks was really lovely. And the possibility to take walks in the evenings after a nice meal in the restaurant. Good food to reasonable price and a lovely garden to eat in when the sun was shining. The breakfasts were ok too. The rooms and the bathrooms were quite small (especially the ones in the attic), but nice and clean.

We were visiting relatives in Leeds and had been recommended this hotel for the views and food.
The best room in the hotel is room 3, views out of two sides to moors and distant hills etc. Beautiful huge room... BUT the rubbish bin contained the previous guest's rubbish! (didn't investigate, but it was half full!)
The bedside light (only ONE despite being a large room with bedside tables to both sides of the bed!) did not work.
The bathroom plug holes were very smelly, needed a good dose of drain cleaner - resulting in the whole bathroom smelling like a sewage farm.
The towels were white - but - almost bald, and some even had holes. The bed sheets, whilst also white, had wear and tear holes also. Although there is nothing WRONG with worn bedlinen and towels - from my experience hotels and b and bs pride themselves in providing luxurious soft fluffy towels to make you feel pampered, not pleased that your own towels are better!
On returning from breakfast (we were staying 2 nights) we found our door propped open and someone changing the towels. They seemed surprised when I asked could they come back in half an hour... and the room was then NOT seviced at all! We ended up making our bed ourselves PLUS the bin, and its contents, still unemptied.
I KNOW we COULD have complained and called people up to sort things out BUT we shouldn't have to.
Apart from that...
Lovely views and location (car park not big enough for hotel guest's cars - no spaces reserved for people staying, rather than just come for a meal)
Staff very friendly and service in the VERY busy dining room and bar fast and efficient... BUT they really need to sort out the room maintenance!!!

4 Thank Bigbarb
