“Good value”
Reviewed 20 April 2007

The hotel is conveniently situated close to M62 in it own grounds.
Booking was handled well
All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful.
Hotel was very clean.
Rooms well adequately appointed.
Restaurant was very good, as other T.A. have remarked. I was travelling with 2 Spanish colleagues and they were very impressed with quality of food and selection.
Breakfast was included in our rate and was very good.

Set back from the main road by a long drive through shrubbery, this hotel was formerly a very large private house, probably Victorian, constructed in local stone.
We booked several weeks before going but forgot to order evening dinner and were not prompted. We were unable to have any as they had outside parties coming in and the restaurant was booked up. We felt we should have had a chance to book first as we were staying guests. It felt very excluding and we had to go out to eat while outsiders came in.
My guest and I booked a single room each and requested a double bed in each. We got the double beds but my friend was given a small room in the attic - the servants' quarters - and it was inconvenient to be separated by a floor as we had booked so far in advance. She hated the room too and found it poky and dark. We were told the room allocations were only made the previous evening - no incentive to book early there. This was disappointing and rather spoiled our stay.
Unsmiling receptionist on duty when we arrived but she was not at all rude.
My room was large enough and the en-suite was OK - wobbly toilet and grouting loose around bath, but bed soft & comfy. Heating good & responsive. Oldish small TV with only terrestrial channels, which was irksome. Dated decor was depressing, but it was still a comfortable night. The breakfast next morning was excellent and imaginative, and service really fast. An excellent end to an otherwise rather lacklustre stay, but cooking so good we would definitely wnt to visit the restaurant on another occasion, but until the rooms are re-furbished and room allocations procedure improved, probably not to stay overnight.

  • Liked — Comfortable bed and good heating. Ensuite was fine.
  • Disliked — Dowdy decor, old TV with no satellite channels, not near to my friend whom I booked with
  • Tips/Secrets — Remember to stipulate rooms together and to book evening meal at time you make reservation

Stayed in this hotel many times throughout April, May June this year for business reasons.
* Very friendly staff
* Excellent food; never had a bad meal !!
* Superb breakfasts
* some of the rooms are a little 'tired' regarding decor.

Recommended.
