Me and the other half went to Salvia recently, we've been a good few times now and it's been constantly above the rest, the hosts are friendly and helpful, the food is excellent and it's not over priced, for 3 courses each and a bottle of wine at £60 its impossible to moan. The service was swift, the wait times were minimal and the flavours were amazing, the chefs are great. I've eaten pizza in a lot of places but this is by far the best calzone you'll get anywhere.

Ok, so we don’t go to Salvia’s every week, but we have been there on several occasions, and have yet to be anything other than totally impressed.

Don’t be put off by the less-than imposing façade; Salvia’s is tucked away on the main A644 Huddersfield Road just outside Mirfield town centre, and is stuck in the corner of a car park, with a Garage Door Firm and a Vet’s for company. It is small, perhaps 40 covers.

However, whilst it may not be the place you’d drop into as you are passing, you would make a large error of judgement if you didn’t go!

Once inside, you are greeted by the jovial staff, and treated properly.

The food, hah, yes, the food. Now this is an Italian Restaurant, so you would expect the normal Italian Fayre; those of my fellow diners who go for this kind of food will not be disappointed; but, for the past few visits, myself and the rest of the party have discovered that Salvia’s dish up the most wonderful fillet steaks, and about eight different ways, to boot! I’ll not bore you with details of the menu (just visit the website and download), but in addition to that in print, the daily specials board is available.

Two caveats, not criticisms. Firstly, it can be a bit expensive if you push the boat out; our meal this time worked out at over £30 per head excluding drinks, but we did have three courses each plus coffee. Secondly do take the time to book; Salvia’s is only small, and, by the way, does not open on Mondays.

I warrant you will want to go back, like us!

I live just up the road from here And discovered it a few years ago, we keep returning as its just so lovely. The atmosphere, the service, the staff, the food mmmm the food. I know garlic Pizza breads are the same everywhere but here they are just amazing. There presentation is fab and the wait for food between courses is fab! We will continue dining there.

The restaurant didn't actually open until 5.30 pm but when our singing group turned up on the doorstep just after 5.00 pm with limited time we were welcomed in, supplied with drinks, bread and olives and kept cheerfully entertained in conversation with the proprietor until the kitchen was able to take our orders. Our deadline proved no problem and our meals were speedily served and much enjoyed - light and flavoursome salads or high quality meat or fish dishes. Top marks to Salvia for food quality and personal attention. I hope to be able to eat there again when time is less pressing!

When looking for somewhere to eat early evening before giving a concert at Mirfield Retreat we did not have to go far before we happened upon this little gem of an eating house. Tucked away amid an industrial-looking development (which caused us a little confusion in how to access the place - it is back-to-back with an Indian Restaurant) is 'Salvia' Italian Restaurant - conspicuous only by a glazed 'blister' in the corner of this 'shed' development. However, a surprise awaited inside - a small but well-laid-out room on 2 levels and an open kitchen with the most welcoming staff and proprietor. We were rather early - 5.10pm and they only started taking orders at 5.30pm but we had to be finished by out by 6.30pm! Non c'e problema! The owner welcomed us in and sat us a a table for 6 and we had wine, bread, oil and balsamic with bowls of olives whilst we waiting for them to prepare the kitchen. The specials menu was very inviting and not run-of-the-mill - A colleague ordered Seabass and was given two large fillets of the most delicious fish I had seen in a while. I ordered breast of Duck in Orange sauce - this was beautifully tender, tasty and not the slightest bit fatty. Others had a variety of salads and pasta. The most enjoyable part of the experience was the engaging nature of the staff and the proprietor - we had a terrific chat about music and theatres - he is a lover of many types of music but particularly jazz and opera. We were out by the intended time in a most relaxed and sanguine mood. The concert was good, too! If you want a small gathering or a quiet meal with well-crafted dishes that are not over-facing but yet satisfying, this is for you. Look twice or three times for it - you may miss it to begin with. However, once visited, never forgotten!
