Owner description: One of the most important survivals of prehistoric England, Stonehenge consists of a group of huge rough-cut stones, some more than 20 feet high, arranged in two concentric circles.

Totally do-able in a day. It's about a 2 hour drive by coach and the route is very scenic. Stonehenge lives up to its fame and is an impressive structure. Though I did expect it to be a bit larger! There are plenty of day tours that leave London around noon and return by 6.30pm. It gets a little chilly so layering is recommended. The food options are limited but you can get yourself a cuppa to warm up.Toilets are a bit primitive but ok. Try the ginger wine at the souvenir shop, delish!

took a tour from Bath and enjoyed the countryside ride. they are building a new (& badly needed) welcome center and it should be open in a few months.

Was a little disappointed when we arrived at the stones. We thought it would be bigger! Although a lovely drive to get there the prices seemed too high to warrant a walk around so we viewed from the road and continued on.

I hope that the new visitor center (still under construction in Dec, 2013) will do justice to this ancient site. The current facilities are primitive: unheated underground toilets, take away food service with a few picnic tables exposed to the wind and rain, no explanations given of the rather sophisticated construction techniques used over 4,000 years ago to create this monument. The audio guide volume was so weak it could barely be heard at maximum volume and the it constantly shut itself off and had to be restarted from the beginning. If the guide on our tour bus had not told us, we would probably have missed the tongue and groove connections between the lintel stones and with the upright stones supporting them. Neither would we have been aware that the stones were transported as much as 250 miles before being erected here. Visitors are not allowed closer than 50 yard (meters) and there were no replica stones out where visitors could touch them and appreciate the work that went into creting the original stones.

The site is very dramatic and you have to pinch yourself to realise the whole thing was erected a few thousand years ago without the benefit of metal tools.
The time of year meant that it was very cold when we visited and the new centre was not yet opened so not a lot to do except walk round the site.
Will definitely gain when the visitor centre is up and running.
