“A hive of information”
Reviewed 14 August 2014

This local establishment is staffed by friendly staff with a wealth of local knowledge even informing me that Amesbury is Britains oldest settlement, even before Stone henge, as there is no public transport to Stonehenge the staff quickly arranged a local taxi to pick us up and could not have been more helpfull

“A genuine hidden gem”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The highlight of my trip to Wiltshire was not Old Sarum, the Wood Henge or even the World Heritage Site at Stone Henge, but the tiny little museum at Amesbury. This new project only recently set up in a small hall is filled with marvellous artefacts found locally. It is staffed by the two loveliest historians it has been my pleasure to meet, Christine (like Phil on the Time Team but miles more attractive) and Michael [champion tea maker], who I believe has written the little synopsis of their site.

It may not look like much from the outside but if you want the excitement of real prehistoric finds close up, it can’t be beat. Christine makes history come alive with her theory of how and why Stonehenge evolved. Get her to tell you about the magical spring [top secret location] where the awe inspiring “purple” stones were found and proper Mesolithic worked flints. [on display]
Hear about the Amesbury Archer, a cousin perhaps of Ötzi – the Iceman found in the Southern Tyrol.
I love history but like most folk, work in a totally unrelated field and escape back in time through reading. If you like me enjoyed the fantastic (well the first 3 anyway) Jean Auel : Clan of the Cave Bear series, and struggled to imagine the tools and implements –well here they are, up close and personal. Christine even brought out her little box of treasures and let me handle some flint blades [I managed a light cut of the finger, they were still so sharp] and for me the “bestest moment” holding a cooked auroch’s bone from around 5000 BC. I was like Amy from Big Bang having a tiara moment.
Stonehenge for me was an anti-climax, hey so what about these tools and bones on display in sealed cases, I touched a genuine aurochs bone Yaaayyy!
