We have just returned from a fantastic couple of days at Bowood where the only bad point was the dinner in the Shelburne restaurant This is our second stay at the hotel and this time we came with friends for a short mid week break. The hotel and rooms were lovely as was the spa and grounds but on our last night we decided to eat in the restaurant instead of going to the wonderful pub just outside the hotel gate. Two of the group had starters that were only ok but when the main meals arrived the cod dish was the size of a starter portion. The cod was over cooked, there were two tiny potatoes and a teaspoon size portion of samphire. When the manager came over to ask if we needed anything else my friend replied" yes the rest of my dinner". This was greeted with a glare and she said that she would give feedback to the chef. When we said this wasn't good enough we were offered a cup of coffee! We eventually got the cod taken off the bill but we had to suggest that as it was not going to be offered. The rest of the mains were of larger portions but both the steaks were over cooked. My friend had to go up to her room to get some crisps as she was still hungry. Not a nice way to end what had been a lovely couple of days.

Dear 99lindah99,

Thank you for your review of Bowood following your stay last week. I was delighted to read your comments regarding the hotel and your stay with us, although was disappointed to read your comments with regards to the restaurant. The cod dish came onto the menu late last week and clearly needs some work to bring it up to expectations. Please accept my apologies for this disappointment, this was clearly not our intention, and we will take your feedback on board to perfect this dish.

Bowood is a purpose-built golf resort spa within the grounds of the Bowood Estate. The landscaping is by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and I’m told it was his first golf course. As a building, the hotel is corporate blockish and ugly, though some fine planting softens it considerably. Inside it is devoid of charm or character. It is contemporary without a lot of style. That said, our third floor Lansdowne Suite was excellent, with a lofty ceiling, plenty of space, a fabulously comfy bed and a huge marbled bathroom which compared with a Four Seasons hotel.

We had an early morning dip in the pool - this is one of the most impressive things about the hotel, a minimalist pool with a glass wall giving views of the golf course and grazing deer. The whole spa operation looked impressive and I can see how this and the golf course is the core of the business. There is probably a large local membership.

That’s the good news. Unfortunately, the restaurant operation was dismal. While the service at dinner was never less than friendly and obliging, the food was awful - overcooked cod fillet, tasteless potatoes and a nasty crab sauce that might have come straight from a tin. A dessert of creme caramel and pears was a disaster. Breakfast the next morning was even worse, a real shocker, and the restaurant, shorn of its tablecloths, looked positively scruffy. The breakfast waiting staff’s general shabbiness matched the room perfectly. The buffet was miserable - tinned fruit, no bread apart from sliced, and a hot buffet that was curling at the edges. I asked for freshly fried eggs and received a scowl from the so-called chef who fried my eggs by putting them into cold pans and then under a grill. This was quite one of the most dispiriting breakfasts we’ve ever had in Britain.

I suppose £260 for dinner, bed and breakfast was acceptable if you only took the room and the pool into consideration. Certainly a luxury hotel such as Chewton Glen or Lime Wood would cost three times as much. But apart from the room this soulless place just wasn’t good enough.

Bowood is owned by the Lansdowne family and I urge them to give their hotel an urgent inspection and upgrade. If you want to see the spectacular Bowood House and Gardens, note that entry is free for hotel guests but you can’t just wander in at will - the general 11-5 admission time applies to everyone.

Dear Pausanias

Thank you for your review of your stay with us. I thank you for your kind comments with regards to hotel and take on board your aesthetic comments. As the landscape develops and evolves with the building it will lessen the impact that such a new build has on the Bowood Estate in general.

I was extremely concerned to read your comments with regards to the restaurant. The cod dish was a new one on our menu last week and clearly needs some developing to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the menu. The breakfast service, I apologise for, as this is unacceptable and will be addressed forthwith. Thank you for your forthright comments and feedback, all issues will be resolved.

Just returned from another lovely stay at Bowood. My husband and I have stayed here 4 or 5 times and have loved every one. Staff are very welcoming and always remember us, rooms are beautifully decorated and the hotel is exceptionally clean. The grounds are beautiful and watching the wild deer is a delight. Can't wait to return. On this occasion we would like to thank Gemma on reception for making this stay extra special. Thank you all at Bowood!

Room Tip: The balcony rooms are lovely and face the golf course and the suites are outstanding, very big and b...

Have just spent a lovely couple of hours having Afternoon Tea in the Library at Bowood Hotel. Very tasteful and comfortable setting over looking the golf course. Very attentive service and really great scones - all at an extremely reasonable price.

We just had a golfing weekend at Bowood and had the best time ever! We said it was the best golf course we have ever been to, beautiful scenery fantastically maintained and a very warm welcome to the club. The room was exceptional and the turn down service was a nice surprise after dinner. The food was exceptional, we ate at the Brasserie Restaurant and breakfast equally as good. The pool was a lovely facility to have and overall a faultless trip

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking Academy course instead of the front which would overlook the car park and w...

Just returned from a very enjoyable trip to Bowood. We were a party of eight, five golfers, three non-golfers. We were impressed with everything - the golf course, our rooms, the public rooms, the location, the spa, the staff. The only blot on the landscape was dinner in the Shelburne. The food was very unappetising, poorly cooked, and in some cases just silly. Since when was crème caramel a dessert in a sundae glass with horrid jelly at the bottom and sickly, sweet cream and ice cream and a sauce on top? And don't get me started on cooked Little Gem lettuce! The only people in our party who enjoyed their main course were those who chose the steak.

Just had a most amazing stay here - had booked somewhere else, walked in, looked at room, walked out - luckily I managed to book this place on line instantly and never was a better decision made. Staff lovely, room amazing - I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! Bathroom to die for. Lovely meal in restaurant - although my steak was overcooked, it was replaced in minutes with just what I'd asked for. Very good breakfast - all in all an excellent way to end our cruise break (we had decided to detour to Calne, my home town, on our way back to Northampton from Southampton).
