We stayed at the Rectory for a mid-week break to celebrate my partner's birthday. We were looking, as always, for something a bit different but still good quality and stylish - and the Rectory is all of those things.

It feels like you're staying at a friend's country mansion as you sweep up the gravel drive and pop your head round the front door. Check in is fuss free (I don't think they even took my credit card) and there are just racks and racks of papers and lifestyle magazines in the downstairs lounges to borrow.

Our bedroom overlooked the gardens and although a little shabby chic, the bed and plumpy feather pillows, duvet and crisp white sheets meant we stayed in it for most of the break - taking advantage of those magazines and the DVD library.

But the most loveliest thing was the food. It was a shame that more guests didn't seem to use the restaurant as we were on our own most mornings and evenings, but I guess it was midweek. The food is stunning - yummy cooked breakfasts and fantastic evening meals - we didn't even bother trying anywhere else...just stumbled up to bed with stuffed tummies!

This place would be lovely for a Summer wedding or booking out for a special occasion. I'd love to return in the Summer and try the outdoor swimming pool.

We found the rates and food prices to be very reasonable after checking out what some of the favourite Cotswolds hotels like Cotswolds House Hotel charge (£250+). We booked through laterooms and got a really good deal and although it doesn't have a spa or anything like that I thought it was charming and the service excellent.

And one last thing...location is really good...easy access from the M4 (but feels like you're miles from anywhere) which means it's good for weekend get aways.

Wonderful place - charming staff, stylish decor (without being pretentious), fabulous beds & linen, lovely views over the gardens and delicious organic food. Can't fault the place, the food or the people. We've booked our wedding reception there - what more can we say?!

We stayed at the Rectory for one night in November 2006, and booked the whole hotel and all 12 rooms for a celebration. The building is an old rectory set in beautiful gardens, and it is full of character. Our deluxe room was absolutely beautiful with panelled walls, a large fireplace, and a roll top bath as well as separate walk-in shower. We visited the rooms of several of our guests and all were lovely: many had fireplaces, and those on the second floor had exposed beams and sloping ceilings, but this just added to the character in such a beautiful old building. Everyone loved their room. There is a cosy bar, and the dining room is beautiful with large windows overlooking the gardens, two large fireplaces, and wood panelled walls. The food, wine, and champagne we had in the evening were all excellent, as was breakfast the next day, and the service throughout our stay was most helpful. Two of our guests had small babies staying with them and the staff catered for their every request. Some guests were quite picky eaters but they loved their food. We are definitely going to go back for a weekend break, and highly recommend the hotel - the rooms are excellent value when you consider the quality, the service, and the overall character of the hotel.

My husband and I travel up to the Cotswolds on a regular basis to see several friends who live in the area. We probably come up 6 times a year. Over the last 2 years, we have stayed in over 7 different hotels but now choose to stay only at the Rectory. We feel like it is a second home. The staff know us by name, our daughter acts like she owns the place (!) It is small enough to feel homely but big enough that you get the benefits of a hotel - swimming pool (which is heated and I have to say not many outdoor pools are nowadays), fantastic food which is all organic and freshly prepared. When others do stay without wanting to sound snobby it does attract nice clientele. The rooms are excellent value compared to many Cotswolds hotels and in my book you get more here for your money than anywhere else. We can afford more expensive hotels but have just got fed up with getting ripped and coming from London we have pretty high standards and this place seems to get the balance right. We've stayed there 4 times now and every time it gets better as the hotel manager seems to be doing ongoing refubishments and upgrading. I would strongly recommend this place - but not too much as we don't want to miss out on a room!

On arriving at the Rectory for a surprise birthday celebration, we encountered our first problems. Being greeted by the general manager, we were told that there was a problem with our room and we were to be downgraded. Without taking our bags up we decided to check the room. having climbed up three flights of stairs we were shown to the attic room which was far from anything like the rooms shown in the brochure and which was booked. we know the weather can not be helped but the room was so hot and we had our dog with us and there was know way he could have stayed there. There was no shower in the room just a bath with telephone handle shower. We could not stand in the bath because of the ceiling. On returning to reception we asked for a room change. We were offered a further down grade to a much smaller room. after discussion with my partner we decided this was not what we ordered and decided to leave. we collected our dead flowers that had been sent by friends and left in the heat of the room and we left. we were offered a cheap bottle of champagne which we declined. it is such a shame that the day was ruined. even more so when we were then told that someone had booked our room and four others, so were more lucrative than our business. We could have been told this by phone and saved us a journey
