Description: As the original Bistro in Devizes (established 2003) we pride ourselves on being true to the original concept - that is a small, family run establishment (usually with a chef owner) providing a menu that often features slow cooked, seasonal dishes. The setting is traditional in that it is informal, relaxed and cosy. However, we are known for food that 'tickles the tastebuds', is influenced by a range of cuisines and always has The Bistro 'twist" to it. Open both at lunch time and in the evening, we have the distinction of also running a cookery school, now known as Vaughan's Kitchen and operating from another location in the town. Committed to sharing a passion for good food, Chef Peter Vaughan is a member of the Academy of Culinary Arts and of the Slow Food Movement.

“Mediterranean”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 October 2012 via mobile

This is a small boutique restaurant in the little brittocks in Devizes, near the Market Square. The food is excellent, the service personable and welcoming. Prices are moderate. I was there for lunch, am hoping to get back another time for dinner. This restaurant is attached to a cooking school and I plan to attend their chocolate demonstration event October 10th. More later.

“Wonderful as always”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2012

Once again, we have had a wonderful meal at the Bistro in Devizes last night when celebrating our wedding anniversary.
Although the seating downstairs might be more intimate and romantic, we always prefer to sit upstairs as then you can see that staff at work in the kitchen. However busy Peter is, he always finds the time to chat with you and his passion and knowledge of food can so clearly be seen. It is always a joy as well listening to him teach his young apprentists, and if you are lucky you might even get to sample some of their attempts!

Why do we return? The menu always changes and you can always try something new and we have never been disappointed. Whether it is one of his themed weeks or just a change with the seasons and availabilities, the menu is always varied. Last night we had a combination of meat and fish and the flavours were amazing and cooked to perfection.
The staff are well trained and can tell you exactly what is available as specials and the costs, last night Matt looked after us well.
For the quality of the food, the costs are very reasonable, we have paid much more in other restaurents and been less satisfied.
Thank you Peter and staff, we will see you again soon.

“Fantastically-delicious food and great friendly service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2012

We stumbled across this restaurant by chance down a small side street and it turned out to be the best find! A small bistro with a relaxed atmosphere, the specials on the menu were original and different, very creative, and each mouthful was a pleasure! The service was very good, friendly and well attended without being over-bearing, and the price of dinner was more than reasonable. I would recommend this restaurant every time. I can't wait to be stopping in that area of the country again!

“Quiet and unassuming, but you have to try the food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2012

tripped over this place when following the Kennet and Avon Canal in a narrow boat and so glad that we did.
From the outside the place looks quiet and unassuming, the menu give a hint of the food that is to come, but it was even better than that!
The staff were very knowledgable about the food, and where it came from and the service was excellent but not fussy. The food was excellent.
Cant say anymore really. If you are in Devizes or in the area definately worth a detour.

“Great food, 4.5 stars!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2012

I was really looking forward to eating at this restaurant and went full of expectation - I was not disappointed. We popped in on Goan Night and were lucky enough to find a table (a cancellation, oh joy) as we had not booked. We had planned to eat at the nearby Tapas place, but they only open at weekends; their loss was definitely our gain. The Bistro is run by Peter Vaughan and has created quite a stir among the Wiltshire culinary set. Reassuringly Mr Vaughan was front of house, enthusing about the menu; this level of enthusiasm is always a good sign! Delicious, stove-top cooked poppadum (Goans never deep fry them explained Peter) and fresh mango relish disappeared rapidly before an appetizer plate of naan bread, fennel seed bhaji, cooling raita and interesting samosas were devoured. I was really impressed - I wasn't expecting to find such interesting food in a sleepy market town. It just goes to show how wrong I was. The ambience was wonderful; the Bistro is typically French inside, quite small and intimate but quirky and fun. There's a really modern, foody vibe and the atmosphere was great - regular customers chatted away and the staff were friendly and efficient. My only gripe is that my skate was a little over cooked but the overall quality of food was superb. I look forward to visiting again!
