Great boozer. Local characters. Lovely food. Friendly folk. Meat draw. Quiz night. Ace tapas. Sunday roast. Beer garden. Skittle alley. Guest ales. Nuff said. Top banana.

“Awful food, weird place. Certainly no gastropub!”
Reviewed 15 July 2013

Even though my father-in-law had reserved a table in the empty dining room, the welcome we received was... well, highly unwelcoming. The surly landlord just about managed to fill our drink order, despite there not being much on the drinks menu despite it being a pub!

Then I was informed that the only vegetarian option on the tiny menu was off, and I would either have to eat a "vegetarian stroganoff", whatever the heck that might be, or order four "bite-sized" dishes as a main meal instead. Not acceptable, but I was forced into it as the rest of my family wanted to stay as they were too polite to cancel their reservation.

In the end, we were pointed towards our table, delightfully situated beside a large, grotty 1970s extractor fan, in an undecorated dining room. The rest of my family also decided - possibly in empathy with my plight - to order each four bite-sized options each, at which point the kitchen probably spontaneously combusted. The staff were confused and quite obviously thought this was laughable, as they treated us with absolute contempt from then onwards.

When the "bite-sized" things appeared, they were rubbish. Dry stale "flatbreads", nasty cold flavour-free stuff, bits of dry salad garnish - the only edible thing on the table was the hummous, which looked very much like it came out of a tub. For a family of four, we were charged the best part of £60 for this gastropub extravaganza. Risible food, bad service - never again.

“Lovely local”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

Visited here on numerous evenings and have always been met with a warm welcome. Can be busy and has a good local buzz when it is. Good standard pub food and well kept 6X.

“Delightful evening meal”
Reviewed 8 March 2013

We had a delightful meal here recently. There is a new enthusiastic chef with most of the food homemade, with locally sourced meat. Good choice of starters, mains, and delicious homemade desserts. Worth a visit

“A hidden gem just off the main road”
Reviewed 20 May 2012

I have been to the Rose and Crown a few times in the last few months when going or coming back from Salisbury, its a few minutes off the main road near Devizes.
It is perhaps not a beautiful country pub but is a really pleasant place with a great landlord and his family team. The atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxed with nothing being too much trouble, the food is very good from light bites through to a full three course dinner all sensibly priced without any comprimise on the quality of the produce. Newspapers are always available and free WiFi too which is handy as I tend to be passing through during the business day and can catch up over lunch.
It is a pleasure to get away from the branded chains of pubs and find a truly individal pub serving its local community and passing visitors so well.
