“good history venue”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

I loved the brief history of Wiltshire County and the significant history of Devizes. well laid out, enjoyable attractions, fun history. well worth a visit, it is also updated periodically and quite current. the museum has contributed items to Stonehenge and has gotten some artifacts from that site as well. all part of Wiltshire County.

“Amazing gallery (recently redeveloped) of prehistoric archaeology.”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

I was extremely impressed by the Wiltshire Museum's new ground floor gallery of Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeology. Good use is made of the space available, the exhibits are very visually engaging, and the interpretation provides academic detail without being intellectually inaccessible.

There are some incredible artefacts on display, including the iconic items from the Bush Barrow burial: a large diamond shaped lozenge of sheet gold, and a dagger with a wooden handle impressed with fine gold pins. Also sheet gold objects from the Upton Lovell Barrows, amber and jet beads, Beaker pottery, so-called 'grape decorated' incense pots, axes, and mace heads. A must see for the enthusiast, interested amateur and casual visitor alike.

Information on the origin, uses and purposes of grave goods and everyday objects provides great context and a comprehensive understanding of prehistoric life and landscapes. What particularly stood out for me was the focus on individuals' stories - the elite men *and women* of Bronze Age Wessex - and also the antiquarians responsible for many of these discoveries in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The inclusion of a reconstruction of one of the West Kennet chambers, digital media, a dressing up area and an activity trail allow children to interact just as readily as adults with this gallery. Just a 30 minute drive from Stonehenge, I strongly recommend including the Wiltshire Museum in your itinerary - to get a sense of the 'bigger picture', and to see the better artefacts and displays.

Curator David Dawson and his team are to be commended for producing such a fantastic exhibition that I hope will challenge existing public perceptions of later prehistory - and inspire the next generation of archaeologists.

“Excellent for adults and kids plus the curator is both extremely knowledgable and dedicated.”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

The curator introduced the museum as the best bronze age collection in the country. He's not exaggerating. If you're in the stonehenge/avebury area, go see some of the beautiful and fascinating finds. And the other periods are well represented too though they have yet to be updated as the bronze age gallery has.

“upto date museum about wiltshire”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

interesting collections spread over a couple of houses.
for anyone going to Stonehenge , Avebury or any local sights this is a must see.
Odd layout, due to the constraints of the building, starts off with roman rooms before prehistoric.
plenty of short film clips to keep interest, and relay some of the important bits.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your visit. We are gradually updating other parts of the museum as well as our new Prehistory Galleries. The plan is change the Roman gallery into an environment and natural history gallery, giving the background to the Prehistory galleries and more recent development.s

“Breathes life into Stonehenge”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

We visited this museum straight after Stonehenge. It's a very different (considerably less expensive!) experience.

The Museum displays grave goods found from digs organised on the burrows & tumuli close to the Stonehenge site. It gives the human side of the Stonehenge story: you see the gold jewellery, the weapons, the beads and the bones of those who were laid to rest there.

Upstairs is very much a work in progress - downstairs is well laid out & well worth seeing. It brings a personal feel to the stones.
