Review of Caen Hill Locks

Caen Hill Locks
Ranked #2 of 26 things to do in Devizes
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 April 2014

Take time to walk alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal or cycle further than the sixteen locks which make the stunning well-known and well-photographed steep flight. The incredible engineering feat extends to 29 locks altogether, and whether seen on foot, by bicycle of from one of the barges on the canal gives you the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful countryside and many aspects of nature in the water and on the banks. Fishermen are happy to pass the time of day, tell you what they've caught (or hope to catch!) and there's a public house and a café for those needing refreshment.
Parking is available roadside or at the lower end the pay-and-display car park can be found up a lane.
If you like being beside the canal, the annual Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race happens every Easter; the first competitors leave from Devizes Wharf and go along the canal the opposite way - not towards the locks. Find a spot anywhere along the 125 mile route to watch the very fit teams compete!

This flight of locks is a marvellous feat of engineering with some stunning views.
This is a nice walk for all the family and ideal to have a picnic or even a meal at one of the local pubs or restaurants in Devizes which is at the top end of the locks.

Cean Hill locks is a spectacular flight of locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal. However, it is not a flight that should be attempted without strength and courage as once you have started you cannot stop. We enjoyed our walk up and down the flight and were glad we were not in a boat.
The cafe at the top is an essential must visit place.

Midway along the 16 locks there is a lovely little café . It is mainly staffed by young people who are friendly and efficient . Nice selection of snacks and drinks .

A walk along the tow path is a gentle meander up,or down,a modest incline mixed with the pleasure of viewing the narrowboats making their way through the locks.
A cup of tea halfway back at the cafe is just reward for myself and my wife and a free bonio for our dog.
A grand day out.
