“The Castle Hotel, Devizes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

I organised a cycle ride from Sandhurst to Bristol for a group of 17 people, we stayed at the Castle on Saturday evening (19 July 2014) and also had our evening meal at the hotel. The service we received was excellent, we were greeted by 17 pints of ice cold water which was much welcome after our ride. The service for the evening meal was exceptional, with one of the waitresses even going as far as to walk around Devizes to lofcate & purchase chocolate bars at 10.30pm.
The Hotel has a lovely character, comfortable rooms and an excellent breakfast. For anyone cycling along Cycle Route 4 it is within easy reach of the canal towpath.

17 of us stayed in this hotel overnight while cycling from Sandhurst to Bristol. From beginning to end it was a great place to stay....imagine 15 of us arriving dirty and wet with 15 bikes and baggage all at the same time...there was safe undercover storage for the bikes and the staff were so welcoming and helpful it made the arrival even better than it was ..after 70 miles on the road we were ready for a stop! The hotel is lovely..yes it is on a road but it is in the centre of the town and they do have secondary glazing and ear plugs provided.go for the back of the hotel if you think it will affect you..... All the rooms were lovely, clean, nicely decorated, beds comfortable and ceiling fans running when we arrived..perfect...we stayed in the hotel for dinner and it was fantastic - many thanks to the owner for the complimentary drinks...not some thing you get in many 5* establishments so much appreciated..food excellent ..well done chef on that mammoth order...great breakfast too and if something was wrong it was very quickly corrected it but the best asset this hotel has is .....the staff. These girls are a wonderful team..Lily, Rosie, Daisy and Jo ...nothing was too much trouble..if they didn't have it ..they got it for us and smiled all the way...even chocolate late at night!! Thanks for a brilliant overnighter..if we are passing Devizes again I wouldn't hesitate to book...

Room Tip: Traffic noise at front may disturb you but ear plugs provided and most of our group slept well..back...

Booked after DBF13, the Castle has maintained its warm, friendly atmosphere. A decent night's sleep on a comfy bed with a good breakfast sets you up for the day. Had a meal in the bar on one evening this time and the Castle maintained its standards.
Booked again for DBF15!
thank You!!

Good points, great breakfast and attentive staff serving it.
Bad points, everything else.
There seems to be a lack of interest here and also little attention to detail.
For example, my bed was not made properly. How difficult is it to make a bed with just a duvet on it?
No tea or white sugar in room. Resolved by duty manager but shows lack of attention by staff.
No hens eggs on gammon at evening meal. Mentioned this to staff but no feedback from anyone.
Group of 5 people ordered 4 lamb meals the same evening. First they were told that only one lamb meal was available, then soon after that no lamb meals were available.
For the price being charged this hotel needs to give the service to match.

Dear Chris,

Please accept my apologies for the errors that have occurred during your stay at the Castle Hotel. I can see how your experience would leave you with the perception that there is a lack of attention to detail. I'm sorry that your stay was impacted by some mistakes and I'm equally sorry that we have left you dissatisfied with our responses.

I hope that you will see from the previous very positive reviews that your experience was not indicative of our usual high standards of customer care, but of course this does nothing to ease your own frustration.

The hotel is centrally placed for access to Devizes and it's surrounding area. The staff are helpful and friendly. Cooked breakfast was excellent although the cereal selection was small. Alpen which contains sugar is not ideal and would be better sugar-free giving the customer the option to add.

We stayed for a couple of nights, combining business and pleasure. The Executive room was simple and well appointed. Towards the back of the hotel, the room was quiet apart from the chimes of the local church clock. However, we slept well and were not disturbed.

There is a small amount of parking at the hotel but there is a large pay and display car park opposite. The meter can be pre loaded from the previous evening which means you don't have to rise early to feed the meter. Rates are very reasonable.

Room Tip: The executive room is worth the extra. Don't be afraid to phone the Hotel to negotiate a good ra...

I stayed at this location with my wife and our two year old toddler in a family room. The positives more than outweigh the negatives in this instance. Firstly the staff all round seemed professional and very helpful, couldn't fault them at all. The downstairs bar and restaurant was nice, cant really comment on the food as we only had a bowl of fries, but looking at other peoples food it looked tasty.

The family room we had was spacious and clean with a decent sized TV and adequate space for storage, we requested a travel cot and the one was provided was really good. Really good sized and clean bathroom. No parking at location but there's a pay and display across the road.

The only small negative is that we was in room 3 situated at the front on the main road, this was quite noisy throughout the night and our toddler struggled to settle. The only other little was the bathroom door had several holes in it, and for £105 per night it wouldn't be a bad idea to nip to B&Q and buy another for twenty quid.

Room Tip: If you have light sleepers in your party request at the rear of the hotel.

Thank you for staying at the Castle Hotel and for leaving such a positive review. It is greatly appreciated.

Please accept my apologies about the bathroom door, you're absolutely right, the repairs should have been carried out in a much more timely fashion. The solution is now in hand.

We stayed at The Castle Hotel for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our room overlooked the main road but the secondary glazing managed to mute most of the traffic noise. Disposable earplugs - not used by us - were provided for light sleepers. My wife had two really sound nights sleep as did I in a double bed which had a nice firm mattress.

The bath is quite deep so those who are a little unsteady on their feet may require assistance when bathing.

Enjoyed the excellent breakfast - full English with locally sourced produce - and enough to keep one going throughout the day. Part was self service - coffee, tea, juice, cereals and jams for the toast - but the freshly prepared mains were brought to the table by the very friendly waiting team. Other breakfast choices were available including a vegetarian option.

We had dinner twice. The first was the Friday night fish and chips special - very tasty and good value. The surprise was the lamp rump chosen the following day - it was magnificent. This is a cut of meat not served in my locality so we were very pleasantly surprised by the tenderness and flavour of the meat. This dinner choice is highly recommended.

The staff were more than helpful and very friendly. Hope an opportunity to return occurs soon because Devizes is a lovely market town with plenty of privately owned shops in which to browse and spend.

Room Tip: The rooms that do not overlook the road will be quieter.
