“what a fantastic halloween night!!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2009

I went up for the halloween party, it was excellent!!! the owners should be proud, couldn't say a bad word about the place. don't understand the review about a ghost tour, as i have been trying to book one for mths, but due to refurbishments thay haven't been available, seems like there is jealously about cos the owners are doing a fantastic job and should be proud. i would Definitely recommend the place to friends.

After scanning through the reviews on other peoples stays at The Black Swan, I was rather surprised to see such a nasty, lengthy piece entitled ghost tour and night in hotel.
Considering this person CLAIMS to be psychic, I think the whole review must have been based on a personal level rather than on the quality of their stay.
My stay at the Black Swan was excellent, with friendly staff and good quality fresh home cooked food. Although there are no vigils at the moment due to rooms being currently refurbished, the Halloween decor more than makes up for it. The rooms are clean and tidy with facillities to make hot drinks, and although being refurbished the decor is quaint and sets off the right atmosphere for this old coaching inn. Mike and Yvonne are the perfect hosts, making you feel very welcome and they can't do enough for you to make your stay thoroughly enjoyable. There is definatly a spooky feel about the place, and thats not down to the halloween decor, although this certainly adds to the atmosphere. I personally experienced some very odd things and heard noises and footsteps that couldn't be explained, and also captured orbs on my didgital camera. I will certainly be going back for another visit and hope to take in a vigil the next time. The Black Swan is a credit to Mike and Yvonne and their family, who run this old coaching inn, and i would recommend staying here if you want a warm friendly atmosphere, delicious food and maybe you might see the odd spook or two.

My trip was very worth while. Having read another review called "Ghost Tour And Night In Hotel" the person who wrote it seems to run down the hotel and the tour. My time in room 4 was strange but I dont want to go into much detail as it will spoil it for another people. Lets just say I will never forget it. There are spirts there and them rods they use for the tour do work. One of my friends and I are left handed and they did not work for us. Everyone else who was right handed the rods did work. I would of liked to spend more time in the pub but we never booked a room. I would never stay in room 4 but thats my own personal reasons. I did however enjoy the tour and I would go back again in the future.

We didn't stay at the hotel but popped in for a pub lunch whilst visiting Devizes on a canal holiday. We were struggling to find a pub that would accomodate our two dogs - pubs with beer gardens seem to be few and far between in Devizes! We stumbled upon The Black Swan and were promptly greeted by staff and made to feel very welcome. They had a couple of tables set up outside and were more than happy to provide a water bowl for the dogs. Food was served promptly and was superb! I would highly recommend their baguettes and homemade chips! Best pub lunch I've had for a long time, and great value. Definitely worth a visit if passing by.

I booked (and paid for) a double room and we were given Room 11. This was the smallest double room that we have ever experienced.

Oddly, there were insufficient towels. Only then we were told that the room was usually used as a single room! (Surprise, surprise!)

Well that is very nice! Never again.

(Oh, and don't forget to ask to borrow a reading lamp, if you want to see anything other than the television!)

There is a lovely warm quirky feeling to this historical and charming hotel which occupies a great location in the centre of the market square.

We were make to feel extremely welcome from the outset and nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were friendly and attentive.

I have to make a special mention to the quality of the food - this was second to none - with large portions of freshly prepared food from a Chef who clearly enjoys what he does - there would be no problem for him on 'Hells Kitchen'!!!

There is a large court-yard in keeping with the period of the hotel in which you c an park your car - an added bonus in an old market place town such as Devizes. I certainly had no problem maneouvering my car.

Al in all a great stay and I didnt hear one 'bump in the night'!!!!!
