“Great stay - wonderful hosts- brilliant food”
Reviewed 31 October 2009

We had a great welcome at the G & D - and there was a very high standard of service throughout.
We stayed in Room 1 - which is ensuite. Beutiffully and comfortably furnished.
Food was fantastic - with excellent attention to detail - we shall return.!
We walked to the famous Caen Hill locks from the pub- and met some very friendly villagers on the way!

We are now thinking about when we can go again.

The pub is on the main road - so you are likely to hear some traffic noise.

Our room was well-appointed with crisp white linens and a bathroom stocked with Cowshed products – our first experience with this line which we thoroughly enjoyed. It took a few minutes to get used to the geometry of the room, which, in keeping with its four hundred years of age, had few right angles, but this added to the charm. The restaurant is known locally for seafood that arrives fresh daily. We had a great dinner there.

The landlords were all extremely helpful and friendly and the place is relaxed. One caution: the pub is on a moderately busy road and the rooms are (obviously) over a working pub / restaurant both of which generated a bit of noise. We didn’t find this to affect our stay. We liked the George & Dragon a lot.

Finally, note that there are two George & Dragons close to Devizes. This one is in Rowde, a village a mile or two northwest of town.

Our stay at the George and Dragon for our 1st anniversary was superb. The owners were very accomodating. We had everything we needed provided for us. The rooms are stylish/funky and the food there is super. There is now no better place to stay in Rowde!! Definitely worth a visit.

I decided to take my Partner away for his Birthday, and had been to The G+D for dinner previousley, where i had been informed that they were going to be adding a B+B to there upstairs area, so decided to book as i had always been more than happy with my visits.
The rooms are amazing! To the standard of any hotel that i have stayed in anywhere in the world, the Restuarant has also had a slight refurbishment, that adds a really nice personal touch! The food as usual was amazing, as was the service!

I would recomend the G+D to anybody that wants amazing food, great service and Beautiful rooms.

We had an amazing Stay!

Thank you to everyone at the G+D!

We booked the George and Dragon at the last minute and we were very impressed with their helpfulness and efficiency with directions, local sights to see, etc. Upon arrival we were taken to our very well appointed rooms. These guys are ex-Soho House so when it comes to taste in decor, products and finishes they know their stuff without detracting from the character of the building.

We headed on down to the dining room at 8pm and proceeded to have a very leisurely dinner. The service was spot on and most importantly the food was excellent. Given they receive fresh orders of fish and seafood from Cornwall, we decided to order mainly this and we weren't disappointed. The monk fish was great, crab risotto was delicious as were the desserts.

We had a peaceful sleep and then woke up to a very decent full English breakfast and the papers the next day. A very pleasant night away.

The George and Dragon was taken over a couple of years ago by Chris, Phil and Michelle. At the time it was a fairly successful pub with a good reputation for fish.

It has been transformed into one of the best food-led pubs I have ever been to whilst still retaining its local chartacter. In addition they have recently added three rooms above the pub in a simple yet classy style, making a fantastic addition to the pub.

The team have extensive experiance in restaurants and hotels in London and New York and it shows.

The food was as good as I have had in a long time, served efficiently and charmingly in a great environment. The menu was one of those that, as you read it, you have trouble deciding what to chose from as there is so much that sounds great. Fortunately we stayed for a Saturday and Sunday so managed to work our way through a large part of the menu.

The rooms were brilliantly converted, creating a modern feel (Flat screen and DVD) but still retaining the Listed features of the building. The bed was vast, the pillows and sheets were fantastic quality and the bathroom was full of Cowshed products from Babington House.

The quality and the style of the rooms made the price an extraordinary good deal.

Having had a fantastic meal we crawled up the stairs, collapsed in bed and watched a DVD (from their collection) - what more could you want...?

I will be going back with my girlfriend and am also thinking of booking the other two rooms for some other friends so that we can all have drinks and dinner downstairs and enjoy the rooms afterwoods upstairs without having to leave the building...

...and finally Chris, Phil and Michelle are some of the best hosts in the business. A really great place.
