just been to Franco's which is usually a treat for us as we love Italian food. The food and house red wine was still lovely. I can't comment on the coffee because after waiting over 20 minutes to be served all we felt like ordering was the bill. The waitress was only interested in the table of Londoners rather than anyone else. Shame as I was looking forward to a latte. We've always considered it a great place to go but after tonight we'll be looking for somewhere else with better service.

Franco's was chosen as the venue for my wife's office Christmas meal. A table for 16 was booked and we had all chosen from a menu that was distributed at the time of the booking. It was a "Christmas menu" as opposed to a "Christmas dinner" but the general feeling amongst all of us was that it represented poor value for money as portions were small and there was no attempt at all to decorate the tables with anything remotely "festive".

I had ordered a starter of pate, a main course of beef and a dessert of ice cream. The pate was pleasant, was accompanied with a thick cranberry jelly and served with two stone cold small slices of toast and a small salad garnish. It was OK although it would have been better with warm or even hot toast.

The main course was very disappointing - my beef consisted of three small slices of what appeared to be braised beef, two tiny roast potatoes, a dessert-spoonful of cabbage,4 or 5 slices of Julienne carrots and a very stingy amount of gravy. You might just have made a sandwich with it. Several of us who ordered the beef expected that communal bowls containing extra potatoes and vegetables would be placed upon the table but it wasn't to be, what we were served was what we got.

Some of our friends opted for the chicken and all said it was way too salty. The person next to me had the salmon and said that it was overcooked and not particularly tasty.

My ice cream dessert was probably the best bit, as you might expect in an Italian restaurant but after I'd finished, I, along with several others said that we were still hungry.

We had ordered some wine, our end of the table opted for the house red which was OK, nothing special but was way overpriced at more than £16 per litre. Add to this that there wasn't a single piece of decoration set upon the tables, plus I know that the general consensus was that the entire experience represented poor value for money.

We had paid marginally under £20 each for three courses which would have been reasonable if the portions had been larger. In fact, I wouldn't have minded paying a bit more for a more acceptable "dinner".You don't expect a banquet for twenty quid but for the amount of food we all received, it was derisory and amounted to little more than a snack. If we had wanted a "snack" we could have gone to any one of a dozen pubs in the town and enjoyed a much better lunch with larger portions for half the price.

We have been here several times before and have always had a very good meal. Same again . The food was great but as the restaurant is in a cellar the noise of the other dinners was deafening. It seemed that everyone was shouting to make themselves heard as there were two tables of eight! Having said that, we will go back even though we thought it a little expensive.

We visited Franco's this week, together with another couple, and had an excellent meal, in colourful, busy, yet relaxed surroundings. The house red wine was good, and went well with the 2 courses we had room for! Calzone - a huge wrapped pizza, our friend ate every piece! I chose the carbonara; the portion was large and the quality excellent. Served promptly, with good advice given when requested. A very atmospheric atmosphere suitable for couples, parties, ladies' nights and of course a warm welcome for families. Excellent value too £50 per couple.
