The Schoolhouse Hotel

Reviewed 1 February 2014 via mobile

My partner and myself visited the School House first in September and are constantly drawn back to its excellent food and unhurried personal service we booked a table for New Year's Eve and packed an overnight bag just in case, ( I'm glad we did ) we asked if they had a room spare so we both could have a drink. The rooms are very clean and just perfect for couples, ( I believe the family rooms are very spacious) warm beds and a very good bathroom.
The food here is to die for!!
it's the biggest draw for us and it is extremely fresh, seasonal and never the same ! The staff ( owners ) are fabulous hosts with nothing too much trouble.
So much so we have booked again for valentines weekend as it's just right for us!
9.9/10
Freddy is a must to meet !!

The building had a nice light ambience, maintaining its old character and style. It was peaceful and the tables in the restaurant were well spaced out.

We visited the restaurant on a weekday lunch time. The food was superb and it was the first time I had tasted Black Pudding, a well cooked starter with delicious apples and a tasty creamy sauce. The haddock fell of the fork tender and well seasoned.

The owners were very friendly and paced the three course meal well, giving ample time to digest each meal, at no time did we feel rushed.

I was stuffed after the two courses, but we managed to fit in a dessert, we had the rich chocolate pudding and bread and butter pudding, yummy!

I would certainly reccommend this place for an enjoyable dining experience for a reasonable price.

Reserved a room for a 1 night stay whilst I was working nearby.
Told on the phone it was £55 for bed and breakfast. No problem.
Upon breakfast was told its £11.50 per head for breakfast an absolute rip off!
The room was very basic TV kept losing signal wafer thin pillows and damp patch on ceiling.
The building looks lovely from outside and to be fair decor in restaurant was nice but the room I stayed in was terrible, price would have been okay if it came with breakfast.
All in all don't bother with this place at all.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

This was a lovely place to stay for convenience to the Cotswolds, Bath and London. The owners are very pleasant and helpful. The food is very good and they have a well stocked and inviting bar. The room was fine but I would recommend they replace the mattresses as I ended up sleeping in the bunk bed in our room as the mattress on one side of the double bed was so unforgivingly hard I couldn't cope with a second night in that bed.

A lovely old building, nice and light inside. The room was comfortable and clean with a nice view of the little garden; the meal was nice and the service very good. Nice to stay somewhere individual and with character.

Room Tip: 'Gordonstoun' was nice with its big potted palm!

The welcome we received upon arrival was first class. We felt like we were staying in a home away from home.
The rooms are furnished and decorated in the perfect style for the building. No noise from the outside as in a peaceful setting. The bathroom is a little tired but not dirty at all. The shower does seem to be less then adequate. If there is anything wrong it is the lack of tea making facilities in the room although available at reception. Also check in is not while 5pm.
The restaurant is nice but the main meal slightly overcooked.
Ideal location for us as close to the m4 and the hospital where my husband is attending a course. Very close to a beautiful park area to walk the grounds and take a picnic.
Great value for money!

I booked the School House Hotel to put on a BBQ for our 30 staff at our premises and we were not disappointed! Can't put it better than one of our employees, who said "...last night's BBQ was absolutely fantastic, the food was amazing, I've been to many BBQs commercial and home but that food was 10/10 - and gluten free (most of)". Superb service, no fuss, no mess and really excellent value for money. Couldn't recommend highly enough for business events outdoors.
