What a great pub! It is one of those places that has all the right ingredients for a perfect meal out. It has the charm of the quintessentially English inn with a mouthwatering menu that caters for all palates and an excellent wine list. We were there on a Sunday so just had to have roast beef - lovely crispy potatoes, huge yorkshire pud, perfectly pink beef with a selection of vegetables that were cooked to perfection. I didn't have a dessert but Eton Mess looked very tempting and was devoured by my friends. All topped off by sitting in the walled garden - a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Having lived in the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire region for 8 years now, we are blessed with a huge selection of very good eateries. That said, our absolute favourite place we like to visit for the best Gastro food and wine is the Vine Tree. We are always made to feel so welcome by Tiggi and Charlie, you will be given a fantastic menu selection that is not only extensive, but prides itself in sourcing the best produce in the South-West. The wine menu is first class, but my favourite being the house 'pink bubbles' which is comparable to Laurent Perrier rose. The icing on the cake for us is the welcome that our two miniature Schnauzers, Maxwell and Montgomerie get. The Vine Tree is extremely dog friendly, they are really made to feel part of the family, even at Christmas when they were given their own dog presents. We keep coming back time and time again, simply because it is the best place to eat in the region. I couldn't recommend the Vine Tree highly enough.

We come here three or four times a year for lunch, and it is usually very good. We gave it a very good review in early 2011. This time M's fish was very good, but my lamb chump was far from it. It was cut into three pieces. The last of the three piece, you couldn't cut up at all even with the sharp steak knives they provide. It was just full of really tough gristle.

I guess a real chef would have been able to spot it was a rough old bit of meat before cooking it. I imagine there was a stand-in on a quiet Tuesday lunchtime.

When the waitress returned to take away our plates, I complained, and she went away to the kitchen, and came back a few minutes later to offer us each a free tea or coffee. A very poor response. I guess if the boss had been there, we would have had a decent apology.

Or maybe the place has changed hands, with a new boss and someone new in the kitchen.

As a party of 10 we gave lots of notice when booking but were squeezed into a small space upstairs. The food was variable in quality: roast beef was fine, pork rather tough, soggy batter on the fish which was certainly not worth the price, but good sea bream and lamb dishes. Starters also varied from good to indifferent but the few puddings we tried were OK. We had been warned that we might have to vacate the table two hours after our reserved time, but service was so slow that we were there for much longer. They were very busy and the staff were doing their best, but were rather overstretched. Had it been warm enough to eat outside things might have been different, and the setting is very pleasant, but not worth going out of your way. Probably better on a less busy weekend, but rather pricey for the quality we had.
