“A well preserved abbey unlike those almost totally destroyed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

The abbey is in remarkable shape compared to many other in the British Isles. So it is very interesting to see what a real abbey looked like. Of course there is Westminster abbey which was not touched by Henry the VIII. But we have seen so many others in almost total ruins and not useable like Rievaulx, Glastonbury and Tintern so it was a pleasant surprise and delight to visit Malmesbury. It has a very nice gift shop as well. Between the Abbey and the Abbey house garden Malmesbury makes an interesting excursion.

“A lovely building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

I like visiting churches - there is always something of interest in them - Malmesbury Abbey has plenty of interest in it - enormous stone pillars, an intriguing stone 'room' hanging over the nave, the tomb of King Athelstan, some beautifully decorated books. The outside is interesting as well as part of the exterior building is ruined - it was originally 3 times as long as it is now. If you do visit, look out for the grave of the young lady who was killed by a tiger in the 1700s!

“Warm Welcome on a Wet Day”

What a wonderful experience! Apart from the interesting building itself we particularly liked the warm welcome we received, the charming gentleman who told us about the historyof the building and town, and the welcome refreshments offered by the small cafe.
