“Faded, relaxing, disappointing service and room”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

The ground floor of the hotel is very atmospheric, small comfortablen sitting rooms in which to linger after dinner. We booked a standard room in the main house, £125, having been promised a character room on the website. The room had character - we had stepped straight into Downton Abbey - the servant's bedroom in the attic! The furniture was basic, the bath did not empty when we had a shower, there was a lot of traffic noise and the room was lit as light as day all night by the hotel's floodlighting. One of the light bulbs was out but no- one was concerned when we reported it. We had booked an evening meal in the Brasserie. We were asked to have our ore-dinner drinks at our table. When we declined the offer we were given menus before the drinks arrived. Our order was taken and we were ushered to our table with our drinks. It was all very rushed and we were made to feel that we were an inconvenience. On checkout, when asked the obligatory question 'did you enjoy your stay?' I made the above comments. In return I was told that I should book a more expensive room next time. There will not be a 'next time'!

Room Tip: Choose the most expensive.

This is a wonderful hotel full of old charm.
We have just spent a week here. The staff were fantastic, they really couldn't be kinder or more helpful if they tried. In addition they were happy and cheerful - it was great!
The food is superb especially the tasting menu.
Without doubt we would recommend this hotel and its staff.

Room Tip: 124 first class family room

Upgraded on arrival to main hotel. Room large & roomy but a bit tired although very comfortable. Only real issue was the cooking smells from the kitchen directly below. Breakfast was adequate although a little chaotic over the bank holiday. Great location for exploring & free wifi/parking. Hotel was everything I expected from a 3 star hotel but I would definitely return as lovely ambience with lounge areas to enjoy the surroundings.

My Husband and I stayed for 2 nights in a standard room. At first I was pleased to find our allocated room was in the main (old) part of the hotel, rather than the extension at the back as others have commented it wasn't as nice there. We were attending a wedding at Abbey House & Gardens, so the location was absolutely perfect.

Everything about the hotel is lovely and quaint, as photos suggest, so I'll just detail a few negatives, which some people may find useful.

Firstly, our room was on the second floor, the bathroom was quite cramped (though not too much of an issue), with one window which was kind of around the corner from the bed. There is no aircon and the fan we requested didn't really help to cool the room. Ok, so we visited on one of the hottest weekends of the year and I was 30wks pregnant at the time, but it's something to be aware of if you like to be cool when sleeping, like I do.

Secondly, quite a minor point really, but we found the breakfast a bit too fancy for our tastes... I love to have hash browns and baked beans with my full English, a couple of sausages and several rashers of bacon. The full English on offer seemed a bit bare, so I opted for the eggs Benedict, which was lovely.

Again these are really minor points and shouldn't deter anyone from staying here, just things to bear in mind to have an enjoyable stay.

Had lunch in the main restaurant to celebrate a special family occasion. It has been some 10 years since we last visited and it was good to see some small changes in the ground floor area including the addition of the brasserie area. The staff are attentive and extremely professional. The food in the restaurant was cooked to perfection (I had lemon sole served on the bone). The building is steeped in history and the great lay out of the ground floor with a number of "sitting rooms" allowed my family to retire to a separate "private" lounge area for coffee which was a lovely way to end our afternoon. Nice courtyard gardens at the rear including a hedge maze which kept my three year old son busy and happy. A special place with a nice atmosphere. Hope to return more often in future. Well done to the team.....

Just had a weekend at this wonderful hotel. From the moment we arrived everyone was so friendly and helpful. The room we had No 17, was stunning. Overlooking the abbey in the old part of the hotel, it was massive with a bathroom to die for. Thank you everyone for giving us a FAB weekend.

after a second stay at the Old Bell, I am very happy to share a very positive review. The staff are very responsive and helpful, accomodating a last minute request for an upgrade on the spot offering an IDEAL room (number 17 to be specific) that has a nice view of the Malmsbury Abbey which is adjacent to the hotel. Be sure to check out the interesting sights in the abbey cemetary including the grave of Hannah Twynnoy while you are there. I've leave the surprise on the gravestone to you.....The room was very well equipped with a very large bath with shower and a clawfoot tub. Could not have been better. We enjoyed a nice low-key dinner in the Bistro that included excellent fair and good value wine selection. Breakfast was great as well with a wide range of high quality mains to choose from. just suggest you check it out. great value for the area nearby to many interesting villages nearby.

Room Tip: try number 17 w a bottle of champagne.....
