Several weeks ago we paid a pre -theatre visit to a "popular" Chinatown London restaurant.
The food was awful and the place was dreadful.
Last Friday we visited the Pagoda in Marlborough to be blown away by the excellent quality of the food and service. The crispy Duck with home made sauce was the best we have ever tasted in over 40 years of world wide travel and cuisine.
The staff were very friendly , courteous and efficient.
It is also a cosy and homely restaurant with lovely white tablecloths/ napkins etc.
You even get Chinese classical piano music in the background!!!
What more could one ask for?

What a contrast to our London Experience !

Our local Chinese restaurant being closed we travelled over to Marlborough for dinner at the Pagoda.
The food was unpleasant, the Crispy fried Beef was so drowned in vinegar that it was inedible. Although we brought this to the attention of the lady, who I assume is the proprietor of the Pagoda, no attempt was made to offer an alternative and we were charged us in full.

The Sweet and Sour Chicken was a breaded fillet of chicken sliced up, which had been overcooked in the microwave and the sauce also had a very acidic taste. The duck dish had a lot of flabby white fat on the slices of duck, not appetising at all.

The only redeeming features of the meal were the noodles and good toffee apples.

Otherwise overall an experience best forgotten.

The best Peking food for miles! Great atmosphere, lovely hosts, nothing too much trouble . You have to have the feast, mixed starters which include the best spare ribs, then crispy aromatic duck, food heaven, after which you feast on chicken and cashew nuts, special rice, Szechuan king prawns and veggies, if you have room after all that the toffee bananas are lovely. The quality carries through to the take away service too.

We've had 2 take aways from here, both have been dreadful. We thought we'd give the restaurant a second chance after the first experience, as who knows it might just have been a one off, bad day. Sadly it appears not. Awful food: soggy vegetables, tasteless mains, burnt noodles, I won't go on. It's a shame as it could be so much better. Not again for us though.

There were pluses and minuses when we stumbled across this restaurant for an evening meal. It wasn't busy, which made us nervous, but the service was friendly and attentive.

Some of the food was great. Notably we had very fresh vegetables, cooked perfectly to retain a vibrant and fresh texture and taste. The lemon chicken was tasty and well prepared, and thankfully was not too lemony. The egg fried rice and special fried rice was OK too.

However, the szechuan prawns were a bit soggy and overcooked, sitting in an overly thick, cloggy sauce. That sauce must have come out of a tin - and a cheap tin at that. It was pretty awful. Suggestion - don't be so lazy and make a proper sauce yourselves!

One thing that is so easily fixed that annoyed us was that the food was served on cool dishes and there were no dish warmers on the table. I eat quickly, but the food still became cold before we had finished. What a shame for such a simple issue. This smacks of simple laziness.

Finally, the meal was a little (15%) overpriced for what was received. If you are going to charge a little premium then put the effort in to deserve it (proper sauces, warm dishes).
