Staff are sweet but the owner is dreadful. Food unnecessarily over priced and really not very good at all. For lovely sunday lunch go to the Outside Chance in Manton or The Wellington or Lamb in Marlborough

My wife and I booked a room over the internet here for two nights earlier this week very disappointing, on arrival we was told our room was upstairs so we went upstairs looking for our room. We got upstairs and there were two rooms but neither had a name or number on them. We went back down stairs and the man behind the bar said oh I don't know which room your in, I haven't been up there for ages, just try the keys in both rooms. We were very unhappy about this as there may have been guests in one of the rooms. The man should have done this for us. (Surely). We eventually got into our room after no help and then as always I check the bedding to make sure it is clean. We'll guess what. The bed had not been changed. The sheets were crumpled and the pillows had mascara on them. Went down stairs to tell the man behind the bar again and he said. Are you sure? We replied. Yes there is mascara on the pillows etc. we told him we were going out for 30 mins and want it changed before we get back. We later got back and he apologized and said it shouldn't have happened. Started to get ready for dinner and went in the shower. There were shower curtain hooks but no curtain so the floor got flooded whilst in the shower. The blind in the bathroom was missing but the fixings were still there and every time you flushed the toilet it moved as it was not attached to the wall. There are espresso machines in the rooms which we thought was a nice touch but guess what, it didn't even work. Next morning breakfast. I asked for a menu and was told oh we just do full breakfast or version of. When I pay £75 per night I expect a little more egg kippers or eggs Benedict or some alternative to a full English. The tea was on the menu for £3 per cup but it sat brewing for ages and never had and colour it taste to it. What can I say what a shambles I obviously will never stay here again. And we did not eat in the restaurant because we thought with all the things that went wrong, what on earth were the meals going to be like. So we ate at pinos a great Italian restaurant at the end of the high street. We normally stay at the castle & ball but we thought we would try the Marlborough never again back to the castle & ball for us.

Thought that I would take the time to say how good lunch was today. Went for the roast beef; not the normal overcooked meat that you might expect, but a gorgeous piece of rare roast rib eye with all the trimmings. Delicious, highly recommended

We stayed here on the 30.01.2013. Our stay was to celebrate my partner's birthday.

The good bits:

The staff were great and although I did not catch the lady's name, she was working both in the evening of the 30th and morning of the 31st January, (older lady than the younger girl also on duty) she was smashing and very professional. The room also lovely and well decorated and bed very comfy. Breakfast was very tasty too.

The bad bits:

Check in was a bit of nightmare, having to walk through pub with things and felt very unprofessional, information about parking wasn't given to us and/or check out times etc. We felt like everyone was staring at us and we were on parade.

Stayed on the first floor 'Marlborough suite', could not hear ourselves talking in the room as noise from downstairs was so bad and the room door offers no form of noise reduction or can it be classified as a 'fire door'. Noise went on until 23:30 when pub closed, and then a further hour for staff to close down. Throughout the evening we felt as though we may as well have had the bed downstairs in the bar area as it literally felt as though people were stood in the same room. Bathroom although lovely, became a death trap were the shower doors did not close properly and shower basin did not drain properly, to the point were staff came upstairs to ask if we were ok as water had come through ceiling! We had to mop floor with all towels etc and to be honest it was very dangerous. When we asked for a spare bath mat and towels, we were told none were available!. We had a wake up call with staff entering pub to open up for the morning duties. (again so loud, might as well have been in our room) Including hoovering, furniture being moved downstairs etc etc. Breakfast although lovely took over an hour to eat as our was messed up. A lovely room, just horrible amount of noise and not being able to get to sleep until 1:30 am and being woken up before 8am was not exactly a relaxing breakaway we had planned.

We decided to book this hotel, rather than the Castle & Ball, due to the fantastic B&B rate offered for a standard room. Upon arrival, we were surprised to discover this was the old Sun Inn we had visited years previously and we couldn't believe the transformation! It seems it has been expanded to expose beautiful wood panelling, with comfy sofas and plenty of tables for eating.

The staff who greeted us were cheerful and very welcoming and showed us up to our room. For the price we paid, the room was lovely and the bed linen and towels were of excellent quality. My only slight critiscisms were, the room could have done with a chair in the corner or some additional hanging space, although fine for a night or two. Also, wall sockets were hard to find for hairdryers and phone chargers etc. The bathroom walls were a bit damp but then we have experienced heavy rain recently. The shower itself was very good!

Parking might be an issue for some, although we parked directly out the front with no problems.

We didn't eat lunch or dinner here, although the menu looked very inviting, hopefully we will next time!

The Marlborough is a public house, so we expected some noise from downstairs until midnight.

Breakfast the next day was very good. No menu to order from, they were happy to prepare anything you asked for. The full English was fantastic. I particularly liked the 12.00 check-out too.

We will definitely return to The Marlborough and will recommend to anyone visiting. Next time, we may even try one of the upgraded rooms which are also very reasonably priced.

Room Tip: The standard room is excellent value for money, but you may prefer to upgrade to one of the suites.

We had a great stay, all the staff were friendly, we were shown to our room with little fuss. Very happy with the room, very clean, pillows and bedding very comfortable. Only slight negative was the rainfall shower was pretty weak but did the job. We stayed in the Castle & Ball the previous night and the rooms there look very dated in comparison.

The pub itself was cosy and the cooked breakfast very good. We had no problems with finding staff, looks like they have rectified that from the previous review.

Didn't eat there in the evening but will definitely try dinner here next time I'm in Marlborough.

Room Tip: Take a drive to the Palm Indian restaurant for dinner. Fantastic food.

Had a great overnight stay. Great welcome. Clean room. Fab breakfast with locally sourced produce . Wish we had sampled dinner here as menu looked interesting and the chef on meeting him seemed very knowledgable and enthusiastic. Will recommend to our friends in the area if they have visitors to send them here.
