“Home away from home...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

We happened upon The Marlborough quite by accident September, 2013. We fell in love with the people and the place and immediately changed our reservations so we could stay there instead of other locations we had planned. We have since been back twice more. The second time for a week in March and this last time for two weeks in May. We love it here so much that we have booked the rooms for retreats and workshops. Our participants had an excellent time! They felt comfortable and very well cared for.

Room Tip: Potentially rooms in the back are quieter...unless you are the one downstairs in the pub making all...

The library bedroom was in keeping with the style of 15th century but with all the comfort and luxury. Well designed decor in restaurant and bar. Breakfast and lunch perfectly sourced and cooked, presented, and tasted exquisite. wow! the lamb and pulled pork sharing platter was to die for! Sticky toffee pudding was gorgeous.
The service was friendly and so accommodating

Stayed for 2 nights in the Marlborough suite - lovely 4 poster bed, nice bathroom, but very noisy, but then again we were right above the bar area (but only informed of this on arrival).

Breakfast on the 2nd morning was a bit shambolic - friendly waitress, but took 45 minutes to get 2 boiled eggs. Staff generally courteous but a little bit cold, but one waitress in particular was great, but unfortunately the manager/owner lets it down - absolutely no sense of service or hospitality. Felt like we were intruding.
Oh...and parking isn't great. Car park behind hotel is tiny and filled with a skip, so forced to park in pay and display.

We had some really delicious courses between 4 of us on the day of the new menu. Delicious mussels, lovely pork, gorgeous home-made burger. A really surprising meal. The wine selection is quite vast but a little pricey. Really lovely lunch with friends.

Staff are sweet but the owner is dreadful. Food unnecessarily over priced and really not very good at all. For lovely sunday lunch go to the Outside Chance in Manton or The Wellington or Lamb in Marlborough

My wife and I booked a room over the internet here for two nights earlier this week very disappointing, on arrival we was told our room was upstairs so we went upstairs looking for our room. We got upstairs and there were two rooms but neither had a name or number on them. We went back down stairs and the man behind the bar said oh I don't know which room your in, I haven't been up there for ages, just try the keys in both rooms. We were very unhappy about this as there may have been guests in one of the rooms. The man should have done this for us. (Surely). We eventually got into our room after no help and then as always I check the bedding to make sure it is clean. We'll guess what. The bed had not been changed. The sheets were crumpled and the pillows had mascara on them. Went down stairs to tell the man behind the bar again and he said. Are you sure? We replied. Yes there is mascara on the pillows etc. we told him we were going out for 30 mins and want it changed before we get back. We later got back and he apologized and said it shouldn't have happened. Started to get ready for dinner and went in the shower. There were shower curtain hooks but no curtain so the floor got flooded whilst in the shower. The blind in the bathroom was missing but the fixings were still there and every time you flushed the toilet it moved as it was not attached to the wall. There are espresso machines in the rooms which we thought was a nice touch but guess what, it didn't even work. Next morning breakfast. I asked for a menu and was told oh we just do full breakfast or version of. When I pay £75 per night I expect a little more egg kippers or eggs Benedict or some alternative to a full English. The tea was on the menu for £3 per cup but it sat brewing for ages and never had and colour it taste to it. What can I say what a shambles I obviously will never stay here again. And we did not eat in the restaurant because we thought with all the things that went wrong, what on earth were the meals going to be like. So we ate at pinos a great Italian restaurant at the end of the high street. We normally stay at the castle & ball but we thought we would try the Marlborough never again back to the castle & ball for us.
