Owner description: The Royal British Legion maintain a Remembrance Garden at the local cemetery. To find it, go down Station Road (opposite the Town Hall), turn left into Tanners Close and straight on into Downs View. The garden is normally decorated with crosses from the weekend before Remembrance Day. In the Cemetery you will find three Commonwealth war graves from World War I and four from World War II.

“Not Really Well Maintained”
Reviewed 7 November 2013

Any Garden of Remembrance should be maintained in tip top condition. This was is not. It is drab and requires a facelift. Located within the older part of the main town cemetery, the local council and RBL need to get together and sort this particularly given the towns contributions to military repatriations.

“A dignified community remembrance garden”
Reviewed 23 August 2013 via mobile

I have spent almost a year trying to get Trip Advisor to correct this listing and move one of the reviews. I most have probably posted corrections over 20 times! I hope this new review will sort this out once and for all.

This listing is for the Garden of Remembrance in Royal Wootton Bassett. The address is Wootton Bassett Cemetery, Downs View, Royal Wootton Bassett. The address needs to be updated.

This is NOT the listing for the temporary Field of Remembrance at Lydiard Park every November. The review entitled 'Very Moving' should therefore be moved onto the Lydiard Park listing if kept, however the Field of Remembrance is only a temporary annual event so Trip Advisor may want to remove it altogether.

The Garden of Remembrance is a small garden created by public subscription on the site of a chapel which was demolished. It is a modest garden but the location in the cemetery in front of a huge Giant Redwood is both peaceful and prominent, as the tree is the centrepiece of the cemetery and can be seen for miles around.

The garden commemorates local people who have lost their lives in conflict and war. In November the local branch of the British Legion plants a cross there for each one. Most of the plants in the garden have been planted by local people to mark one or more of these lives lost.

Although the garden has no direct connection with the repatriations through Royal Wootton Bassett (which ended in 2011) the garden has become one of two locations visited by family and friends of the fallen when they come to visit the town, the other being the War Memorial in the High Street.

“Very disappointed”
Reviewed 9 June 2013

Visited in May 2013, my husband was looking forward to visiting the garden of remembrance especially as his is ex army but we were very disappointed as there was very little here. I assume if you visit in November this will be a different story but would have liked there to have been more in the way of flowers etc

“Very moving”
Reviewed 16 November 2012

Missed the opening ceremony on 09/11/12, but went on 16/11/12. There is a moving, short last post & 2 minute silence at 2pm every day. Crosses are laid out aphabetically in plots and there is a very moving, special section for all those killed in Afghanistan, where relatives have put photos on the crosses - very moving.
The closing ceremony is on 18/11/12.
Well done to the organisers.
