“Great carvery at a bargain price.....”
Reviewed 6 May 2013

We had Sunday lunch at the Island Pool this week, our first visit since the new owners took it over. It was late afternoon and the pub was very busy (as it always seems to be nowadays at weekends), but we managed to get a table.

We both had the carvery, and it was excellent. Hard to believe that they only charge £6.99 (try it before it goes up !). There were 4 meats to choose from, and all of the veg sides were excellent. The quality of the meat on our visit was superb. As a nice little touch, all of the 'end bits' from the meat joints are put into a serving tin for diners to help themselves from. This had some of the tastiest bits of meat in it !!

The roasties were lovely (a fresh tin of them came out just as we were being served, so perfect timing !), as was the mash, and best of all, they served sprouts as a veg side, which is very rare for a carvery.

Overall a superb meal, and as good a carvery as you will find in the Midlands, and all at a bargain price. Highly recommended.......

“Cheap and, well... cheap”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

The Island Pool has had a massive refurbishment since it's last incarnation (The Cookley Arms) and it is only fair to say that it is greatly improved in that regard - and also that if it's car park is any indication, then it is always busy.

However, fans of he previous may will be disappointed with the lack of familiar faces and familiar beverage.

We visited without a reservation and were squeezed in - both physically and seemingly from a time-frame point of view given that staff seemed to be peering at us and simultaneously watching the clock as we ate.

The carvery chef 'Moose' was pleasant as always but sadly the food was somewhat lacking in everything other than salt content which i can only assume was purchased in a job lot such was the quantity involved in the cooking.

The Island Pool is competing with the likes of Crown Carveries (even worse) and such establishments that I hope to never have the misfortune to visit again, and does attract those I imagine prioritise budget over quality. We visited as small group and sadly the consensus opinion was the same.

'Value' below is rated average as the price is right - but not for me.

“Below average food”
Reviewed 21 April 2013 via mobile

Went here for birthday celebration (28 in total). Firstly ordered 2 brandy and cokes to be told they have no brandy??? Not the best start but ordered alternative and placed food order..I was glad I ordered from menu as the carvery meals that past me didn't look at all appertizing....as it was my off the menu order wasn't much better. There were 6 seated on my table and every plate served was stone cold and only about half the food on plates eaten. Did we complain??? Nope, firstly because we would have all had to wait again for replacement meal and secondly I think the replacement meal would have been of the same standard. I think the prices are fine for a cheap and cheerful meal out but even cheap and cheerful should be edible!
2 of our orders were farmhouse chicken which were of a good size portion but dry and very tough to cut (and chew) and the barbecue sauce totally dried up on them. The 2 gammon steaks were way too salted even though again of a good size portion. I am not particular or picky as to where I eat and will try anywhere once but whether you pay £5.00 per head or £50.00 the food should be cooked and served to the best of a pubs ability for the customer and in this case it certainly wasn't the case. Lastly, we sang happy birthday to the 21 year old birthday girl who was given the wrong cake witha big 50 candle on the top by a member of staff....and yes, it obviously didn't occur to them!!!

“Very good pub grub”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

Recently stayed nearby with a large group of people. Breakfasts cost £3.99 and was excellent value, all you could eat and with lots of choice. In the evening a good carvery with a good choice of meats and all the trimmings for £4.99. There is also other options on the menu. Very good value
