Owner description: Carved into the natural sandstone cliffs, the intriguing network of underground tunnels offers visitors an unparalleled insight into life in wartime Britain in the 1940's. Visitors have the opportunity of learning about the experiences of local people during the war from the displays in the tunnels and from the state-of -the-art audio-guides and to find mementos of the 1940's in our shop. The air raid shelter entrance is located right by the Stockport shopping precinct and you do not realise what lies behind the doors, or should I say under the ground. The staff were very helpful and friendly and on this visit I took my elderly father and my son. Three generations thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The audio system you take around with you is very informative and easy to operate. To note it is always cold in the shelter so consider what you wear. Great value, we bought the tickets that allow entrance not only to the air raider shelter but also visits to Bramhall Hall, The Hat Museum and Staircase House which we will do at other times.
Educational, interesting and worth a visit for all ages.

Really good for key stage 2 kids working on WW2 projects, gives a real and genuine kind of experience as to what it must have been like for people during the blitz and Mnachester bombings throughout WW2.
Free for Stockport resident children....BONUS!!!
Kids loved the gift shop too, which has pocket money traditional toys
Great budget afternoon out, not a full day activity though, but could be combined with trip to Hatworks or Staircase House

The main purpose of my visit to Stockport was to explore the Hat Museum, and although I had read a bit about this place previously, I was blown away by how fascinating this attraction was and for me it edged it over the former.

The Stockport air raid shelters are a system of almost 1 mile of underground air raid shelter tunnels that were dug into the red sandstone under the town. The general public tour just takes you around the largest of the tunnels, which could have held 6500 people during an air-strike!

The tour is self guided and you are provided with an audio device that you point at various markers along the way. It's £4.75 for an adult. The tour starts with a short audio/visual presentation which was very well done and I imagine good for children. You are then left to wander around at your own pace. I was down there for about 90 mins, but that was reading every info board and listening to all the audio. There's a gift shop on the way out with lots of neat vintage/retro bits. I was very impressed with how professional the whole attraction was and would thoroughly recommend it.
