I have visited Old Moor several times in the last few years. It is an RSPB reserve with several hides from which to look at a wide variety of mainly water birds on the several areas of still water. Converted, as I understand it, from an old disused colliery spoil heap and workings the RSPB have really gone all out to make it an attractive place to visit.
I think they have succeeded as it is not only a good birdwatching site but is also a wildlife refuge to get away from the noise and bustle of nearby Barnsley. It has a good shop if anyone wants to buy any additional equipment to further get into bird watching, but perhaps most important it has a wonderful restaurant with a good and varied choice on the menu. Many times in the past I have arrived early and enjoyed a substantial English breakfast and quite frankly have not then really bothered whether I have then gone birdwatching or not, as I have been really full up.
All in all an highly recommended place to go to..

Old Moor really is a wildlife oasis, especially birds of course. It was our first visit to this reserve having visited nearby Fairburn Ings on several occasions. There is plenty of parking when we were there on a midweek afternoon, it is probably much busier weekends and school holidays.
First we looked around the well stocked shop, which as you would expect sold plenty of bird related products for even the most avid bird watcher. But tis reserve is great for all as the walks and wildlife are superb, ample hides to observe in the dry and relative warm.
After a two hour walk around the reserve we decided it wwas time to warm up with a coffee and snack( it was December after all!) .The cafe is really good and coffee excellent and very reasonabley priced,we finished off our visit with a couple of small purchases from the gift shop which like the cafe was staffed by friendly people.
To finish i would reccommend Old Moor for a super half or full day out for all the family, and we look forward to visiting again very soon.

I have been a member of RSPB for many years and love the old moor reserve. The hides are great for all level of enthusiasts, and have great games for the youngsters to get involved in bird spotting. The walks are ideal for any age, ability and accessible to all.
The bird table hide and viewing window is brilliant for all ages, but particularly for children as it attracts all types of birds to the feeders.
I have also attended meetings at the Venue rooms and the hospitality is great. The cafe is well worth a visit and you can sit out on the balcony overlooking the reserve.
The staff in the shop are very experienced and will assist if you wish to purchase goods from trinkets to high end binoculars.

well run by the RSPB - good birding for ornithologists but also very welcoming for families with a play area and activities. The Cafe does decent grub (full meals) and hot drinks. Close to Pennine trail so good stop off for bikers walkers and non-birders.
There is acharge to birdwatch but not for the cafe!!
