“Excellent but disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Fantastic place, beautiful grounds, exceptional wedding service and food. Completely lost sight of the room quality. Dirty, grubby and run down. Carpets need cleaning, damp and poor window fittings including carpets and blinds. Wardrobe knob came off in our hands!. New mattresses also required.

Dear Penguin 1961

Thank you for your recent comments following your stay at Monkey Island Hotel whilst attending a wedding reception. I am glad you found the wedding to be so enjoyable but was disappointed to read your feedback about the condition of your bedroom. We are undertaking some refurbishment work to several of our older bedrooms this Winter, and I know this will bring the standard up to the quality of our already refurbished bedrooms. I am sorry you had such a poor room and will ensure we carry out some maintenance improvements in this room as a priority.

Regards

We attended a wedding here and stayed overnight. Our room was on the ground floor, with no window dressing other than roller blinds. Therefore, you had to pull these down to get changed and the lighting in the room was not good.
The bedroom was fine, but the bathroom was small and a bit grubby. The toilet seat fittings were rusty and there was mould on the grouting around the bath.
Although the wedding party were looked after well, it was evident that the minimum number of staff were around. Overall we were left with the impression that this was a lovely venue that is starting to look tired and we wondered whether the lack of staff was an attempt to keep overheads down.
An 'okay' place to stay, if attending an event there - but not otherwise.

Room Tip: Most rooms on the ground floor can be seen in to by people walking by....

Dear Wings 712

Thank you for your recent comments following your stay at Monkey Island. I am sorry you found your bedroom to be below standard particularly with regards to some of the cleanliness and maintenance issues. Specifically, we are looking to change the blinds in the bedrooms this Winter to prevent the problem you had and carry out some refurbishment works on several of the bedrooms.

Thank you once again for your feedback

Regards

There is much that is good about Monkey Island. Great location (though pity about the M4 close by), helpful staff and great value (£145 for dinner, bed and breakfast for two). But it needs some more investment and better taste, both inside and in the gardens. We had quite a nice room with a balcony overlooking the river, but the loo brush was rusty, no pictures on the walls, fallen trees outside, etc. Wifi didn't seem to work.

Dear Seymour F

Thank you for your recent comments following your visit to Monkey Island. With regards to the condition of your bedroom, we will be undergoing some refurbishment works this Winter to put right some of the issues you highlighted. The large tree that came down last week has also now been removed from the area.

On a more positive note, thank you for your positive comments regarding the staff

Booked for special offer of a nights stay, evening meal and breakfast and was pleased with all aspects. The room was comfortable, nicely furnished, and with a balcony overlooking the Thames. Some areas of the hotel complex are showing signs of age and wear but do not detract from the overall ambiance of the building and grounds. We enjoyed our evening meal, though the menu was more akin to what one would expect in a pub rather than a grand hotel. The breakfast was fine, with plenty of choice on the buffet table and a well cooked English breakfast of ones own choosing. And what could be nicer before breakfast than waking up to find a Peacock on the balcony !

Room Tip: Our room no.27 was comfortable, had a balcony with table and chairs and could not have had a better...

Stayed for 1 night as we were dining at The Fat Duck locally for my husbands Birthday .For a deluxe room it was poor.
Damp in the bathroom, toilet brush all rusty, no water, glasses or cups , no magazines, no flannels, no conditioner, small room, horrible mattress which gave me a frozen neck and I had to go and get a massage to ease the pain the next day .No croissants at breakfast, no greek yogurt at breakfast, poor underwhelming buffet .When I asked about the deluxe room ( was told it would be spacious and it was tiny ) I was told it was deluxe because it had a good view.Really disappointed as it was a treat for my husbands Birthday .
The location is pretty, having afternoon tea and waving to the boats that went by was sweet, the grounds and flowers are so beautiful, and so were the 2 peacocks. The view from our room was great, unfortunately a permeating smell of damp was not so great .
Bear in mind, a taxi to Bray for all of 3 min cost £8 .
I had emailed ahead to see if the hotel could recommend a masseur for a Birthday treat for my husband and they suggested I try locally. Well I had already googled and not found anyone , hence me asking the hotel. Not very helpful, but not much choice when loping for a reasonably priced hotel close to Bray ,

Room Tip: no idea, good luck with that

The service and hospitality shown and actioned by the staff at Monkey Island Hotel was absolutely outstanding. When I advised them that we were vegetarian, they were very prompt in providing a meal to suit our dietary requirements. There was no hesitation on their part in providing the absolute best service and wonderful food. Nothing was too much trouble at all. They were all polite, courteous, happy and ever so willing to help. The setting is beautiful and so peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves for the whole evening. Thank you to everyone at Monkey Island Hotel for just taking that extra bit of care for us. Absolutely brilliant service and heart warming care provided by all at the Monkey Island Hotel. Thank you so much.

We booked and stayed for one night after eating at the fat duck. The location and setting are ideal and on a great british afternoon its lovely to sit and watch the river boats go by.
The rooms are clean and comfortable and staff polite.

We had breakfast in the morning and it was a disaster. The kitchen seemed understaffed and the young lady who took our order needee reminding 3 times of what each person had ordered.
We all got our foof at different times, possibly 20minutes apart. Whats going on???
