See my review for the Great House regarding the charges for two starters!!! £26.50 Make sure you check the prices when ordering your food, very misleading.

We went for a family lunch for 12. The staff weren't sure whether to let us sit for a drink in the bar and we were ushered through to our table, which was set for 14. The Sunday lunch menu has four each of starters, mains and deserts. Our experience was that as long as you stick to the straightforward dishes its fine - eg roast beef and Yorkshire puds. But the vegetarian option was pretty terrible. The service was fairly shambolic - waiters bumping into the end of the table, spilling the wine, etc. but it was all fairly good humoured so we didn't complain!
Overall ok food in an ok hotel in a beautiful location.

We stayed here for one night and also had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. The dinner was lovely. Great choice. However, breakfast could do with a better selection of fruit and warm plates for the hot buffet. Our room had a lovely view over the river, but was cold. The bathroom was freezing as the radiator wasn't working. To be fair, the outside temperatures were sub zero, we were only there one night, arrived quite late and did not report this, so did not give the hotel the opportunity to put this right. BUT the electric shower ran hot for about a minute then ran cold. We heard another guest complaining about this.
The hotel does need a refurbishment, worn floors and tired decor.
All the staff were delightful, reception, bar and waiting staff. Would return as the hotel is in such a lovely setting, but not in the winter!

I just have to tell you of the lovely relaxing afternoon we had at the Great House Hotel in Sonning. This month one of our members suggested we meet for our monthly Tuesday meeting at the Great House. Most of us were a little worried, as it was a little out of our normal stomping ground where we normally meet. Having said that the group, which were eight in total, had a lovely time and the location was easy to find. When I arrived with my friend who is disable and was my transport we went into the large overflow car park. Worried about parking to far away from the front door and the slope to the entrance I went and asked where the disable car park spaces were to be found. I was greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable member of staff and was directed to the disable parking. (The Great House could look at the disable parking again with a wheel chair user in attendance for immediate feedback). As there was a function going on in the restaurant, we wanted then were offered the bar. Here the staffs were very helpful moving the furniture around to accommodate us and making us feel right at home. The bite menu was just right for us all and we had our lunch on our laps. A small table was found for my friend who is in a wheelchair so she could have an appropriate surface to eat her meal. Everything was not too much trouble for the staff. It was a very windy and cold afternoon with some rain but the staff had lit a fire ad we were very cosy and comfortable. After out main course some of us ordered dessert and having met for 12.30 went on to chat until 16.00. Following dessert the management approached our group and offered us tea (coffee if preferred) and biscuits because we were unable to dine in the restaurant. This we enjoyed especially as were not paying for the tea, coffee, and biscuits (smile). We left promising to return, as we were so relaxed. The food was above average, the combinations of the dishes were unusually but was very tasty therefore enjoyable. Another thing, which is very important to our group, is the ability to pay individually for our meals. This at the Great House was no problem and very stress free. Finally some information for all you wheelchair users with regards to the facilities. Access was easy all corridors were accessible if snug but my friend said that this was not a problem for her. The disable toilet was a pleasure to use with all aids available and enough space to move when inside the room. This for us was an excellent experience and as we were leaving another group, a family, had arrived for afternoon tea and was enjoying the open log fire.

We recently arranged a family Sunday Lunch for 14 to celebrate my in laws Wedding Anniversary. The staff positioned us in a private alcove in the main restaurant and the table was set out in such a way that it wasn’t impersonal and worked out brilliantly.
Our party consisted of 9 adults and 5 children. The Sunday lunch menu was varied and there were separate menus for toddler and children, all of which were reasonably priced.
The food was of good quality and couldn’t be faulted.
The staffs were extremely welcoming and nothing was too much bother, which in my opinion is a rarity these days.
If you want a good meal at a riverside location, served by excellent staff then I would 100% recommended he Regatta restaurant at the Great House in Sunning.
