The Mill at Sonning Theatre
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Set on the banks of the River Thames, The Mill at Sonning Theatre promises a unique experience where your visit includes a two-course meal and a show in a beautiful converted water mill. Start your visit with a drink (or two...) in the Waterwheel Bar, or, if you visit us in the summer, take a sunny seat on The Mill Stream Terrace. From the bar make your way upstairs to our restaurant with views out over the river, where you will find your tickets and complimentary programme waiting on your table. The main course is served buffet style but our friendly staff will be on hand to take your drinks and desserts orders. After enjoying a two-course meal, prepared daily in our kitchen using only the best locally sourced ingredients, you will make your way into the main event of your visit - the theatre! The theatre itself is an intimate venue, seating just over 200 people, air conditioned with spacious and comfy seats that won't leave you longing for legroom or calling for a cushion. During the year we produce a wide variety of plays in the theatre, including a musical over the Christmas season, and regular music and comedy nights that will have you dancing and rolling in the aisles. Whatever your tastes, in both theatre and food, you will be sure to find something to whet your appetite here at The Mill. Our Waterwheel Bar is also open for artisan coffee and homemade cakes during the day. Pop in and see us from 11am-5pm every Tuesday-Sunday.

“Not as good as previous visits sadly.”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

Have been frequently to the mill and always enjoyed our visits. Just returned from a half empty performance lacking it's usual buzz . The menu was very strange and with only 3 choices on offer one of those was not available. The accompanying dishes were of a poor standard and it would appear you now serve everything yourself meaning there is no portion control and clearly not enough food prepared to cater for the number of people dining. The dessert menu was also uninspiring my partner chose cheese and it would appear to have been rationed to one piece and a small dry piece of toast!! Not sure if their is a cut back in finances but it was poor value for £96.00 for two.The offer of a bottle of wine as compensation was a nice gesture but with one driver not really appropriate. Will watch with interest before returning.

“Fully booked”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We wanted to watch a show but unfortunately they don't have shows on tuesdays. Also the next couple of days was sold out. But the setting is beautiful next to Thames. And across are other hotels that may have been more ideal but more expensive.

“Enchanted April in May”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

We visited for the afternoon matinee performance. Visiting with a very fussy vegetarian meant that I had to vet the menu beforehand and then ask the manager if an alternative could be offered. It could and it all went well. The food selection is quite good; simple food, not very adventurous but sound. There are plenty of vegetables on offer at the buffet. I saw many clean plates. The puddings are "British traditional " and rather good, coming with a choice of custard, cream or plain. The Mill caters to large groups so my advice would be to get there early ( it opens at 12.30) or leave it till later, about 1.15 when you will not need to queue but will still have plenty of time to dine.
The play was charming, very well acted and great fun. I really don't know why I don't go there more often. The theatre is intimate and whilst it is best to be sat centrally there isn't really a bad seat.

“Marvellous Evening”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We visited the mill at sonning last night and what a wonderful evening we had. Not one complaint, the setting is just out of this world, the food delicious with a great choice, the staff efficient and friendly, the actual theatre is so comfortable and cosy and the play was absolutely brilliant, funny, gripping and extremely well performed. Everybody should go there!
