The Swan at Streatley
Reviewed 26 August 2009

We stayed at the Swan for 2 nights on the relax for longer deal - B&B and meal included. Wonderful experience. The lounge area is very comfortable and we chilled out on the sofas and read the papers for an hour one day. The gardens overlooking the river are fantastic, perfect for sunbathing with the added bonus of watching the magnificent boats sailing by. The staff were lovely and very helpful (especially Earl), the room perfect and the meals delicious. Breakfast very plentiful with everything you could wish for and you can eat it in the conservatory part watching the river. The spa is just gorgeous, like a Roman experience! I had a 30 minute aromatherapy massage which was very relaxing. We will return one day definately!

Overall this is a very charming hotel in a beautiful rural oxfordshire setting. We had a ground floor room, you can opt for a river view. The ground floor room was lovely, such a comfy bed, nice decor. The only downside to the room was the shabby bathroom. There was a problem with the hot water in that there was none! The receptionist put this down to the amount of people staying which I found alarming! The cleaniness level in the bathroom was not great. I had a great sleep in the bed which has fabulous quality pillows and duvets! There are lots of nice walks around, it is very scenic. I would say go to this hotel and relax :)

We stayed here for 1 night and had a room with a 4 poster bed and a balcony overlooking the river. The hotel is in stunning setting and our room had a great view of the river. Overall we had a good time but as has been highlighted in previous reviews the decor and furniture is rather tired and in need of updating. This was especially true in our bedroom with dated decor and furniture and a rather shabby old fashioned bathroom with the cold water tap in the bath coming off in my hand!

We had dinner in the hotel which was well presented and pretty good and friendly attentive staff. The breakfast however was dissapointing with tasteless scrambled egg, odd tasting sausages and bacon that had been sitting around for quite a while.

We used the spa which was quite reasonable although the gym is not escpecially well equipped.

The highlight of our stay was the location of the hotel and the friendly staff who could not be faulted. If the hotel spent money upgrading the place it would tru;y be a stunning place to stay. We enjoyed our stay, was good value on the dinner, bed and breakfast deal and would be especially keen to return when the hotel has been upgraded.

We were travelling to the west country and The Swan seemed about the right area for a stop on our journey. We booked at the last minute directly with the hotel. The only room left was a basic double which turned out to have a niceish view across to the village church. It was a reasonable sized room, comfortable bed but nothing special. Bathroom was dated and needed a refit. Noise along the corridor and the banging of doors was a bit of a problem, especially the doors - there must be a simple way of making them close with less of a clatter.

Reception was very pleasant, as were the rest of the staff. We had an evening meal and thought the food was very good but service was haphazard. The same for breakfast. No tomatoes and we had to ask three times for a cup of tea .....it eventually arrived, with our toast order, as we were finishing.

This is a place to go for the fantastic setting by the river. Apart from that it's a bit of a let down.

We had a superior room with french windows onto a first floor terrace overlooking the river Thames. Comfortably furnished and clean. The Bar terrace & the restaurant have exceptional river frontage for watching the world go by (& mooring). The staff were all helpful and knowledgeable and the Table d'hote menu delivered with a decent choice being good value as part of the db&b deal.
We didn't feel out of place making an effort to dress for dinner and were served professionally with food cooked to order and beautifully presented.
Breakfast was of a better standard than many recently encountered although the hot trays take some manouevering !

We enjoyed sitting in the garden by the moored Magdalen Barge (used as a small conference suite). The local walks along the river and over the bridge into Goring are delightful and offer alternative food & drink options.

Would not hesitate to go again and always opt for a river view to take advantage of the scenery. Take field glasses to catch sight of waterfowl, Egyptian Geese, and soaring Red Kites.

Only downside the pool is only a plunge spa and was a trek from our room.

We stayed here for te Easter weekend. The restaurant has a wonderful view over te river and te river facing rooms are gorgeous - though it might be a bit noisy in the summer if there are lots of people drinking in the bar down stairs. Nice health spa (the pool is a salt one and not for swimming) and great walks around the the area. You don't need a car if you come by train.

I stayed here with several friends and family and it was ideal as a weekend retreat. Good location for walks in the surrounding countryside and the hotel has a nice bar/lounge area (though the decor is a little dated) plus outside seating by the river. The bedrooms were of a nice standard (ours had views over the river) given the room rate and the hotel's dinner, bed and breakfast package provided exceptional value - £110 for two people per night. The food was also very nice and well presented, justifying the AA rosettes awarded to the restaurant. All in all, a nice place to escape to for a day or two in the countryside.
