The Swan at Streatley
Reviewed 3 October 2009

As soon as we arrived at the Swan we felt able to immediately relax. It is set in the most beautiful setting, in between the villages of Streatley and Goring. We were made to feel so welcome by the hotel staff, nothing was ever too much trouble. We booked two nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary & stayed in room 20 which is a large room, with a four poster bed and an enormous veranda immediately overlooking the Thames. Dinner was superb, of a very high standard. Breakfast was lovely, in the little restaurant beside the river. The hotel runs little boat trips up the river, but we chose to walk and enjoy the sights ourselves. I could talk forever about what a wonderful stay it was. All I will say is that we will definitely be coming back.

Stayed overnight whilst attending a wedding nearby. Unfortunately we arrived with very little time to get changed and asked of they could make us a sandwich very quickly, only to be told they had no bread! Not what I expect of a 4 star. After a number of false starts however we did manage to get a sandwich. The rooms needed a little love and the hotel generally was quite dirty. Also agree with previous comments, the breakfast was not great. Would we stay again - no! The only thing to justify the price is the location.

My boyfriend and I both agreed as we walked over the picturesque bridge from the hotel into the quaint little village that this was the perfect get-away location. Our room was superb (right on The Thames) and the location couldn't be better. We'd definately stay again and again which is quite ironic as both the service and the food at the hotel were completely below par, in fact it's the worst breakfast I've ever attemptedto eat. However, if you take the short stroll into the village the coffee shop the other side of the bridge is magnificent (what a breakfast!) and the indian in the village is superb for a spot of supper too (but I suggest you book - sorry I can't remember its name) If the management only pulled there socks up and improved the service, food and updated the place a little it would be perfection!

We visit this area frequently, and have stayed at The Swan occasionally over the past 30 years. We've always enjoyed it overall, but this time (the first for a while) was the best yet. We stayed on a weekend package that included B&B and dinner, and it was very good value for money.

The room was clean and bright, and the plumbing worked fine (see pic). The decor of the public areas was clean & tidy. There were lots of lounge areas where you could relax with a paper, and a terrace by the river for when the sun shone. The ambience was good, and it felt like a nice place just to be around and relax. We liked it the way it is, and I suspect that a major refurb would push the prices out of our reach.

The major positives were:
- The location and the views are amazing. If you're a river fan, it's unbeatable.
- The staff are efficient, and very cheerful with it, and there seemed to be plenty of them around at all times.
- The restaurant is great; the breakfast was good, standard, full English and lots of it, and the evening meals were excellent. Restaurant atmosphere is classy but not formal, some people had obviously dressed for the occasion and were very smart, but we were treated equally well though I was in jeans

The building is characterful (i.e. finding your way round takes a while) and it isn't pretentious - I can't imagine it wanting to describe itself as 'cool'. It just seems to want its guests to be comfortable and relaxed.

We tipped via the bill, but I'm never sure whether that actually gets to the staff. Next time, I'd try to do it directly, in cash.

We'll be back.

This is a lovely hotel in a great location. We booked a river view room & had no complaints. Would have given 5 stars but the bathroom could do with an update sometime soon (was very clean though)
Didn't eat dinner at the hotel (but can recommend the Indian restaurant at the top of the village though) but was very pleased with the spread for breakfast.
Great chillout lounge area where we enjoyed a glass of wine before heading out for dinner.
Would definately stay here again and recommend for others

We stayed at the Swan for 2 nights on the relax for longer deal - B&B and meal included. Wonderful experience. The lounge area is very comfortable and we chilled out on the sofas and read the papers for an hour one day. The gardens overlooking the river are fantastic, perfect for sunbathing with the added bonus of watching the magnificent boats sailing by. The staff were lovely and very helpful (especially Earl), the room perfect and the meals delicious. Breakfast very plentiful with everything you could wish for and you can eat it in the conservatory part watching the river. The spa is just gorgeous, like a Roman experience! I had a 30 minute aromatherapy massage which was very relaxing. We will return one day definately!

Overall this is a very charming hotel in a beautiful rural oxfordshire setting. We had a ground floor room, you can opt for a river view. The ground floor room was lovely, such a comfy bed, nice decor. The only downside to the room was the shabby bathroom. There was a problem with the hot water in that there was none! The receptionist put this down to the amount of people staying which I found alarming! The cleaniness level in the bathroom was not great. I had a great sleep in the bed which has fabulous quality pillows and duvets! There are lots of nice walks around, it is very scenic. I would say go to this hotel and relax :)
