“Does the job”
Reviewed 7 November 2011

Expanse Hotel has clearly suffered a similar demise to the resort of Bridlington. Is geared to the fast dwindling British seaside resort market. That said it is clean with functional and roomy accommodation, a good restaurant, with pleasant staff and has a lively sports bar attached to the hotel. It does everything adequately without being exceptional in anything in particular. If you are looking for a decent place to use as a base for a break then fine. Location is fantastic on the seafront and parking is not a problem. Used for 2 nights for a golf trip was ideal for a golfing group. Would recommend to those who can do without state of the art facilities. The Art Deco facade is a real clue to what you are getting, a little dated but fine.

Just had an overnight stay at the Expanse, very relaxing! I would recommend spending that little bit more and staying here. We had breakfast and evening meal both served to a high standard. The rooms are comfortable and have lovely views at the front. The decor is a little tiered and the customers are on the mature side but who cares when your being well looked after

Room Tip: spend a little extra for a club room, room 35 has a view across to Flamborogh as well as the sea fro...

Thank you for your recommendation, We are very pleased that your stay was enjoyable and we hope that you will visit us again. Most of our guests "on the mature side" were quite young when they first came ! They just keep comming back.

I think during my whole stay at the Expanse not one member of staff smiled !

Booking in the person made no eye contact and when checking out despite my 'good morning I would like to check out please' nothing was said to me apart from handing me the bill.......(my contact was just with reception staff and people serving breakfast).

The location is good and breakfast was ok......maybe I was expecting too much in a customer oriented world.

Would I stay here again.....NO

Thank you for your response, we are sorry that you did not feel that you were made to feel welcome. Most of us have been here for many years and our main aim as a hotel, and indeed the reason that we have survived as a family owned independant hotel for 75 years, is precisely to make our "guests" feel welcome.

We booked a last minute Sunday night break August Bank Holiday 2011 and was fortunate to get a sea view room (always my preference). Have been coming here for short breaks for quite a few years from when the children were small (we are only in our 40's now). As I love Bridlington - the Expanse is a very traditional and comfortable hotel. I love the ambience of the place and its location, the breakfast and restaurant menu is very good, the food always piping hot and served at the table. Its strength is it that it has the lovely character which sadly seem to be lacking in the very modern UK contemporary hotels (and I as I travel in my job in europe, I've stayed in lots of hotels). I also think the mark of a good hotel is when you see the same staff over the years. When my partner and I need some "us" time, to unwind from business commitments, go for walks and eat home cooked well prepared food we go to the Expanse. Just one small suggestion is to make more of a feature of the lovely terrace from the lounge area ( the room with the bookcases) as the views of the sea from there are great.

Room Tip: Definintely a sea room, there are some refurbished rooms also

I was just looking at the Expanse rates and planning a break, out of interest looking at the reviews. Having read "Rubbish and rude...." I just had to add my own. We have stayed at the Expanse several times over the past 30 years and it has always been wonderful. We actually got married there in 2010 and my mother and mother in law were both guests; one seriously ill physically and the other wth Alzheimers. The staff were absolutely brilliant and couldn't have been more accommodating. It is a traditional hotel, fulfilling the expectations of a 3* hotel but with traditional standards, courtesy and values....and the self catering rooms are something else. It's really lovely, honestly.

Thank you, we are please that you find the Expanse a special place. We do, we are independant and privately owned, unlike most of the modern, but bland, group hotels about. We have guests, not customers, and we hope that this emphasis shows.
