Overall a pleasent stay and would stay again i have noticed one or two negitive comments on this hotel but then you always get the odd one or two who wouldn tbe happy staying 5* for free if in doubt give it a try and judge for yourself....

I have recently returned for a Monday to Friday 'Turkey & Tinsel' Break at The Monarch Hotel on South Marine Drive in Bridlington. Whilst the weather was not on our side, it is November afterall, I had an excellent stay at this Hotel and I cannot recommend this Hotel highly enough. I am a volunteer Driver Escort/Carer for a local Charity Organisation in my home town of Skegness, and our party consisted of thirteen. Nine members with learning disabilities, my co-driver, a volunteer colleague and my elderly mother who was widowed in February of this year.

As with all of my reviews on Tripadviser, I will present my report in bullet form to make it easier to read and follow:

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Hotel looks impressive from the outside and upon arrival we were greeted by the Hotel's General Manager: Steve Matheson. Whne we arrived, it was still raining a little, but Steve came outside to greet us and to show us where we could park out aging mini-bus without incurring any parking charges or fines. This turned out to be right outside the main entrance to the Hotel itself.
Once inside, check-in was swift and we were all soon allocated our rooms and given our room keys, proper keys, not those new modern key-cards things that often go wrong if they come into contact with certain other objects.

Steve then gave us a brief but important 'welcome meeting' in the main lounge and asked me if anyone in our party would require assistance in case the hotel had to be evacuated due to fire, or bomb scares or anything else that would necessitate the swift evacuation of the building.

LOCATION

The hotel is located on South Marine Drive, right on the sea front itself and almost on the doorstep of the Spa Theatre Complex. It is a short walk from the main town and harbour, and the shops and other 'attractions' are all within a short walk from the hotel.

HOTEL LAYOUT, ROOMS and AMENITIES

The main Reception and Lounge is located on the ground floor. The lounge is very warm, pleasant and comfortable.
The Dining Room and Bar area is located on the first floor, and, despite what some of the other reviews state, is decorated to a pleasant and warm and cosy theme. There are views out over the sea from the dining area.

The corridors are wide and can accommodate wheel chair users. I had access to all rooms allocated to our party and all of the rooms I had access to were clean and tidy and roomy enough for a short break. Again, I can find no fault with the decor.

There are tea and coffee making facilities in all rooms. Some bathrooms have a heated towel rail, although the room I stayed in just had an ordinary rail. There appeared to be what I took to be trouser press's in all rooms, although I did not use the one in mine as I was not sure what it was. Modern flat-screen televisions are provided in all rooms, along with a hair dryer, which can be found in one of the draws.

The water was just at the right temperature and there is heating than can be controlled to your own preference.

There are telephones in all rooms from which you can contact Reception or make direct dial room-to-room calls, although external calls are forbidden. There is a 'welcome folder' which gives you all the information you need to enjoy the Hotel to its full potential. Rooms are made up every day.
I did notice that there were no signs with regards to towels being replaced every day and I was unable to ascertain if they were. My suggestion here would be to include signs which state that if you want clean towels every day, you place your used towels in the bath. If you are happy to use the same towels for more than one day, you hang them up on the towel-rail. A lot of hotels I stay in adopt this policy, not to 'cut costs' but to 'consider the enviroment'.

Some rooms have a balcony.

There is one lift which travels to all floors. The lift did appear to be somewhat out-dated, and I will be honest here, does let the hotel down somewhat. But what I liked about the lift from a safety point of view is that green lights illuminated when it was safe to enter of exit the lift, and red lights illuminated when it was not safe. The main lift door and lift interior does give the impression of an industrial lift and could do with being updated, but that is meant as constructive critiscism and is not a complaint.

The stairs wind up around the lift and are not too steep.

STAFF

The staff are this Hotel's greatest asset led by the General Manager: Steve. Steve and his 'team' went out of their way to ensure we had the most wonderful holiday possible, This has to be the only hotel to date that I have stayed in where ALL of the staff were helpful and pleasant. Each member of staff was well 'turned-out' in smart, clean uniforms and they all had smiles to share. They were polite, kind and helpful to the point of getting a birthday cake for one of our group and arranging candles etc, and when we wanted to pay for the cake, our money was refused, as the staff had a 'whip round' to pay for it. Well done to ALL the staff at The Monarch, including the 'behind the scenes' staff we may not have met. You are all wonderful people and you should be very proud of yourselves.

FOOD

Cannot be faulted.
Breakfast: you help yourself to a wide range of cereals and fruit juices, although hot cooked breakfasts and tea and coffee are served at your table by the staff. They will 'tailor' your cooked breakfast so that you only get what you want, and not simply presented with a plate of food with items you do not like. Just ask the member of staff who 'waits' on your table and they will attend to your every need without complaint but with a warm smile.

Dinner again cannot be faulted, the food was hot, well cooked and plentiful. Again, if you have any special diet needs just let the staff know and they will ensure you get food you want to eat.

This hotel also provides a range of packed lunches at reasonable cost if you let the staff know the night before you require a packed lunch.

ENTERTAINMENT

There is a couple of hours of entertainment provided in the hotel each night in the bar, which sadly finishes around 10,30pm as apparantly the property to the right of the hotel complain if it goes on longer than this. We had four nights of first class entertainment provided by outside entertainers.

I simply cannot find fault with The Monarch Hotel. All I would say is that in addition to the normal 'text' signage, it would greatly assist people with learning disabilities, if 'pictorial' signs could also be provided for those guests, like those in our party, who cannot read or write. For example, it stated that the lift can accommodate a maximum of six persons in words. Our members cannot read or understand those sort of signs, whereas a pictorial sign that depicted, as an example, six matchstick men, they would be able to understand. I stress, this is not a complaint, and my comments are meant as constructive feedback.

GUESTS WITH MOBILITY DISABILITIES

This Hotel IS very disabled friendly with a lift that can accommodate a motorised wheelchair, wide corridors and good sized rooms.

Room Tip: You might want to request a room that is not too close to the lift as the lift is somewhat noisy

Just arrived back home from a weekend at this hotel. Was really friendly, very warm and cosy, rooms were really clean, and overall a really great place to stay. The breakfast was tasty, well presented and plenty of it, all served by really helpful, friendly staff (all speaking great English for a change). And all this right on the doorstep of the Spa and seafront etc. So glad we picked it this year and have already booked to go back next year too. If I have one critisism it would just be that the mattress was a little lumpy, but didn't interfere too much with my sleep.
Well done, Monarch, see ya next year, keep it up!

Rooms can be had for a bargain price but it is reflected in the decor - could do with a refurb. Parking on site also seems to be limited so get in early. Nice seaview and breakfast was pleasant. Also no wifi so a let down in that regards but lack of wifi seems to be an issue in most of the hotels in Brid.

Thank you for your constructive comments. We have a few rooms which need refurbishing and we will be doing some of these in our closedown in January.

There should be free wi-fi in all the public areas but we are not quite there with all the bedrooms at the moment we need a couple of boosters to complete this, but public areas should be OK.

Once again thank you for your comments.

Just back from my second visit this year and already booked for next year ! Felt "at home" from my very first visit. Steve gives a warm welcome as you arrive in Reception, then it's keys, info about ordering an evening meal [we're b'n'b] and we're off to the lift and our room on the 2nd floor. Our first room was at the back and close views not exciting ; ever since , we've had a room at the front with balcony overlooking the Bay. I've even been brave enough to go right up to the rails ! The room and bathroom are spotless and warm on a chilly day/night. There's a great choice of breakfasts and nothing is a bother for the staff. If you wish to stay in, there's entertainment in the evening AND a bar. Yes, it might be dated BUT it's the ambience that counts. We have no hesitation about recommending this grand old lady to anyone. ENJOY !!

Room Tip: Try for rooms overlooking the bay. On a clear night the lights twinkle from the coast- north and sou...
