“Overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

We were greeted very warmly and efficiently. Our room was spacious ,comfortable ,with a lovely balcony. Sadly it was lacking all the touches one would expect from an establishment charging their rates!! Breakfast was nice, served efficiently and pleasantly. The location is excellent fof the Spa and harbour.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony

Thank you for your review following your stay at our Hotel.

I’m pleased you received a warm and efficient welcome by our team and that the room was comfortable. Steve and his team at The Monarch work hard to provide good service and hospitality.

As you mentioned the hotel boasts a great location, especially for both the Spa and Harbour.

Disappointed you felt our product was overpriced as we work hard to ensure we offer both competitive and honest prices for our rooms.

Thank you again for sharing your experience and we trust you had an enjoyable time in Bridlington.

Kind regards

We just had a week at Monarch with a coach trip. The hotel is a short walk from the town and harbour. Our room was clean and compact, it could do with redecorating, the sea view was interesting. The food was fairly standard. The restaurant staff were very good always cheerful, polite and efficient. The hotel manager and our tour manager were excellent always on hand to help anyone. The public rooms were clean and welcoming.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view, all rooms were twin bedded.

The hotel is well situated facing the sea, a short walk from the town and harbour. We had a beautifully clean room with a very comfy bed. All the public areas were very clean and airy. The food was always good, hot and plenty of it with very quick, friendly service. Cheerful banter in the dining room from the head waiter made mealtimes a pleasure. The suggestion of a visit to the old town made our visit, the craft and art galleries/shops on the High Street are well worth a visit and compliment the traditional sea front attractions.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the hotel will be quieter, excellent sea view rooms at the front of the hot...

We went for a weekend to this hotel which we had visited around 12 years ago. It was like stepping back in time, nothing had changed except maybe the staff. they were very helpful and friendly. But this hotel is better suited to the pension brigade that don't care so much what type of place they stay at.it really wants updating badly. it's clean and we got a sea view which was a bonus, but the breakfast i thought was very inferior it tasted like the cheapest they could buy, very poor. The entertainment they had on for the coach party they had in was awful especially as one of the staff thought it great fun to dress up like a prat and gatecrash the turn doing silly sketches( please don't give up the day job ).

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view .

Thank you for your review following your stay at The Monarch.

I am disappointed to learn that the hotel was not to your liking. We are aware that we have a few areas which are due redecoration and we do have a rolling refurbishment plan in place.

We have a committed and hard working team who are dedicated to providing good service and hospitality. The hotel does provide free entertainment on certain nights and I am sorry that you didn’t enjoy the performance.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I assure you your comments have been duly noted.

Fairly last-minute overnight booking, chosen on the basis of other tripadvisor reviews, and I do rather regret choosing this location as opposed to one of the many B&Bs.

We arrived after 10pm; main reception was closed, but we had been told, and there was a sign, that we would be checked in at the bar upstairs - great, but no sign as to where 'upstairs' was! Found an anonymous narrow staircase and went up - luckily, right choice.
Bar had just a couple of people in, barman very friendly and quickly booked us in. He didn't know if the on-street parking required payment on a Sunday, but thought not.
We were on top (5th) floor, but luckily there was a lift. I am sure it was perfectly safe, but it was very ancient and desperately needing a coat of paint on the inside door. Up to the floor, and not very inspired by the initial sight of the entrance to our area, three very plain brown doors in very close proximity to each other,

The room itself was perfectly acceptable; half sea-view, and we'd asked for twin beds. All was nice and clean; plenty of tea and coffee sachets (I hate just having two each, and then being stuck without the extra cup of tea you always want if you can't have one!). Phone in room, alarm clock and very small flatscreen freeview TV on the wall. Hotels never seem to think about the view from the bed, or the amount of sound you need to listen comfortably - which, in turn, makes for extra disturbing sound for other guests... 'Bedside' lights were big and on the wall above the bed,so one person couldn't have it on without disturbing the other. Two towels each: handtowel and very small bath sheet.
Bathroom looked a bit dire, to be honest, with dirty grouting over the bath, but otherwise clean and tidy. Just one bar each of very cheap soap, no shampoo or bath foam or anything.

Checked the hotel room guide. No wifi. Most alarming was the fact that even on Sunday we had to be in breakfast room by 9, which was last time to order anything. If they'd had a menu in the room at least we could have ordered before we went down, but this was really a bit early for a relaxing night away. Beds OK, though pillows a bit firm and foamy, and we slept very well - I was worried about the lift, but we hardly heard any noise from there or other rooms.

Went down to dining room in the morning (the other half of the bar area). They didn't know, either, about parking charges on a Sunday... We were one of the last down to an almost empty room, but were placed on a table in the middle of the room. Would have been nice to be at the edge of the room, or near front windows with the sea view, and would have been good to have some music playing quietly. Instead we were treated to one of the waiter's renditions of various songs... Waitress extremely helpful, but I regret the breakfast was just a motorway service station equivalent, probably (but I don't know) pre-cooked and waiting to be served. Very basic sausages and bacon... Supposed buffet bar items were not present: only orange juice, and no yogurts...

At £40 per person this really was not terribly good value, and there are many guest houses/ B&Bs nearby which charge around the same or less, and which I am sure offer much more.

They have a very small car park (helpful manager told me about it when I checked whilst I waited for breakfast - and yes, there were parking charges on a Sunday morning!).

So, nice people, but not a lot more to offer, really... Sorry, Monarch - you've been deposed, at least in my book.

We visited The Monarch as part of an organised group and were delighted by the the friendly welcome and service provided by Steve and his team throughout our 2 night stay.
The breakfast was plentiful and the hot option was freshly cooked. Other pre-organised buffet meals were also very good.
The bedrooms are not particularly exciting but good and totally adequate none the less and we'll certainly come again.
