We had a 2 night stay with a groupon voucher, read the reviews before booking and thought it sounded pretty good for the voucher price, and we weren't disappointed.

The Booking Process - 9/10, despite reading (after our visit) a lot of people's problems with groupon upgrades, I found the man I dealt with on the phone very helpful and he explained things clearly, I was offered the option of booking the evening meal and said not for now but would let him know if we wished to nearer the time. We upgraded to a four poster, had we upgraded to the large room which others found only had single beds I might have been a bit annoyed. I would not have thought to ask if it was a double at the time of booking when the large room upgrade was offered so might I suggest this becomes an automatic thing you inform guests to avoid any future confusion.

The Staff - 10/10, pleasant, helpful, welcoming, very accommodating and generally cheerful in their jobs

Our Room 9/10 spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated, thermostat controlled heater to set as we wished and a fantastic amount of storage. Although a very small room, I might have found it a little cramped if we were there for a week, but otherwise great.

The Breakfast 8/10, piping hot, excellent selection for all appetites and tastes, anything cooked to your preference without a grumble. Only problem was my husband found his mushrooms (he suspected) been kept warm for a while and weren't great and although I love my eggs runny the fried eggs had been a little under cooked on the top.

Evening Meal - we ate out each evening but the menu in the hotel offered a good selection and a very reasonable price for three courses, as you said in a small kitchen you can't expect 2 meals for a tenner!

The Hotel Overall 8/10. Lovely place, would probably book again (with a groupon) but I do wonder if as a guesthouse rather than hotel (as you have mentioned in some of the responses) your full prices may seem a little steep, as an average 4* with various facilities can be less than £100 per night.

Thank your for your comments.
We do discuss possible room options available at time of booking and we confirm this on the letter we send as confirmation, so therefore there is no reason why anyone should be confused.

As you said in your review, we do cook our breakfasts to order for each gust, so therefore if you would have liked your eggs cooked differently this could have easily been accommodated. Our mushrooms are freshly prepared each morning and supplied from our greengrocer.

Regarding your comments about pricing - our standard rates range from £35 per person per night for B & B inc VAT which represent excellent value.

We are pleased you enjoyed your Groupon Marketing experience.

I booked a 2 night stay for me and my wife with Groupon. Having previously stayed at two other "hotels" offered by Groupon, we (my wife especially)were a little unsure what to expect in terms of standards and quality. When we checked in, the lady on reception was very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. We had opted to pay for a room upgrade and paid our £20 to cover 2 nights. Our room (No 11) was on the top floor and so there were 2 flights of stairs which had we known, we would have requested a lower floor. However, on entering the room, we were very pleased with what we had been allocated. The room was very well presented both decor wise and cleanliness. Not that we needed it but there was a single bed as well as a double and also a fold down cot in the wardrobe. There was a generous ammount of hanging and other storage space which would be ideal for longer stays than ours. The bath (with shower over) seemed larger than standard and a plentiful supply of soft white towels. The wash basin was sited in the main bedroom on its own unit with storage under. Perhaps a hook or rail to hang a towel would be helpful but that is by no means a criticism. Part of our deal included flowers, strawberries and a bottle of champagne which was a nice extra. The hotel and local guide folder was easy to read and gave lots of useful information.
The breakfast was first class in variety, presentation and quality of both food product and cooking and, without considering any of the other pleasing aspects, was worthy of a recommendation of its own to visit the Royal. Again, not a criticism but the off road parking is a little tight to say the least but we were able to park opposite on the road without any problems. Might not be quite as easy during the busy season though.
Overall, very satisfied, more so with the cost of the package that we purchased. Have a £20 discount voucher to use before end of March and if we are able to afford another trip away after Christmas, then its definitely The Royal for us. A big pat on the back for all the team.
Charles & Caroline

Room Tip: A little morning traffic noise from our particular room and would personally prefer the wash basin to be in the bathroom which may well be the case in other rooms so will ensure we ask in advance next time

Lovely clean small hotel. Excellent food. Room was small but not really an issue as only needed for sleeping. The public areas hallways and landings are rather dated, with too many artificial flowers and other clutter. Would stay again and would recommend to others.

We stayed here in July earlier this summer and I'm amazed at the hard work Fiona and Tim put in, but I do feel if they could 'scoop up' and relocate The Royal elsewhere, they would get much more appreciation of their efforts.

The 'do's and don'ts' can be a little intense, but you certainly cannot criticise their pride, or fault their accomplishment, even if it does mean fitting into the workings of their well established routine :-) For us, Fiona was a very welcoming host when checking in and her and Tim made our stay a very cheerful one. The breakfast was astounding for a guest accommodation, the best I have been served in a long time as a seasoned, seaside weekender, alongside a service more akin to hotel standard and so i have nothing to criticise on this at all.

Our room was bright, cosy and warm, and had a sea view too! It was rather small, but as we only used this as a base and somewhere to sleep it was perfectly adequate. The flowers, champagne and strawberries as already mentioned on here are a refreshing welcome and a romantic interlude and a prime example of their aspirations.

If you can appreciate the effort Fiona and Tim are going to, I feel you will enjoy your stay at The Royal, we will certainly be looking at returning here next spring or summer and hope to see you both then!

Hello
Thanks for your comments and noticing that we do actually work really hard. Love the idea of being 'scooped up' - LOL. Yes, we also agree about the doos and dont. We never thought we would need them, but we are afraid that some people who visit this area do need things to be spelt out.
We are pleased you enjoyed our breakfast and your overall stay and we look forward to seeing you again next spring.
Best wishes

Fiona & Tim

Arrival
Right!! Where can I start? We arrived to check in at 2pm as advised. This went well, quite quick. There were a few more people arriving as we were checking in, and they formed a queue behind us. The reception area is not very large and if you are stood there with a suitcase, then people struggle to get past you. Immediately after checking in, an evening meal menu was thrust at us as we were informed that we had to make a choice there and then as to what we required at 6pm for our evening meal. The queue of people were stood directly behind us and we felt rushed into making a decision from the menu.

The Room
We then went up to our room which turned out to be sea facing but very small. To pass each other you had to turn sideways or take it in turns to walk around the bottom of the bed to get from one side of the room to another. Everything in the room was spot on, it was very clean, light, the TV worked well and we had both tea and coffee facilities (as long as you didn’t want more than two cups because of the lack of milk) along with a hairdryer.

The Food
The food was of restaurant standard. It was excellent although the evening meal is probably a bit expensive for a B&B / Hotel.
Breakfast was really really good. There is plenty to choose from and was served with a smile.

The Hosts
The host (Tim I think his name was) was weird! He has a very strange sense of humour. Although it states in their Hotel info notes in your room that the bar is open until 12pm dependant on demand, he decided to close it at 11.15 on one night and 11 another night for no apparent reason as it was quite full at the time. We all believed that there must have been secret passages throughout the hotel because no matter where you went, he would appear standing there watching you with an inane grin on his face. Regarding his partner, not on any occasion that we saw her did she smile. She appears to have a permanent frown.

Summary
The hotel is in a very good location, the food is excellent, the beds were very good and to be fair we enjoyed our stay there.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Yes, running any small accommodation business is just like faulty towers- the series was amazing and it is so true to what actually does happen.

We ask guests to arrive after 2pm and before 9pm however most days a proportion of guests arrive before or at 2pm (never really understand why though!) so it is inevitable that at this stage there will be a queue.

As we only cook for what is ordered for dinner, we do need to ask for the dinner menu choices from guests on arrival. We have found that if we don’t do this then quite often the guests forget or order too late for us to be able to offer everything that is on the menu. The menu by the way was just sat on the reception desk and not ‘thrust’ at you!

Regarding milk – we provide 2 jiggers (portions) per person and if extra jiggers are required then they can be purchased at reception or a fresh jug provided.

Obviously we disagree with your comment about dinner being expensive. We charge £18 per head for a three course menu with coffee & homemade fudge or mints. When the VAT element has been deducted this provides £15 to pay for food, staffing & overheads which is extremely tight and to be honest on small dinner numbers does not even come close to covering the cost of providing this service. When guests book the DBB terms with ourselves generous discounts are available.

As just a small business we will close our bar if it is not worthwhile keeping it open ie not enough people in there or not enough drinks being sold to warrant staying up extra hours.

We must say that we are rather insulted about your personal comments about us – well it just goes to show that what ever you do you cannot please everyone. If you smile and try and have a joke that obviously does not go down well with you and if you keep quiet and get on with the work that’s wrong too! We are sorry that you don’t like our faces!

It’s a shame that you did not recognise that for price you paid for not just one, but two nights for two people with a full bottle of champagne, strawberries, & B & B you had outstanding, amazing and unbelievable value for the package you received! What on earth did you expect?
