“Don't Listen To Any Of The Bad Reviews!!!”
Reviewed 23 September 2008

Myself and my family stayed at this hotel for one night on the 20th September 2008, and nearly didn't book it due to some of the bad reviews on here. I cannot believe what people can possibly find to complain about, the hotel itself and the rooms were immaculate, the breakfast was great and the staff were helpful and friendly. If you want a top quality hotel you have to pay top quality prices and for what we paid I was pleasantly surprised.

stayed at the shepperton holiday inn a few times before when it was a moat house. Standards have certainly deteriorated. We booked a family room (double and sofa bed). The sofa bed was so dreadful and uncomfortabe with its exceptionally thin mattress that our teenaged son ended up sleeping on the cushions on the floor, the double bed wasn't much better. The bathroom was filthy, brown grime around the edge of the bath, the water wouldn't drain away properly, offensive smelling shower curtain, various hairs on tiles, floor and around soap tray, worst of all a rather suspicious looking brown stain on the back of the bathroom door!!!!! There were only 2 pillows on the double bed, a distinct absence of a "pillow menu" mentioned in previous reviews. We asked at reception for more pillows, and also 3 bath towels as there were none in room.Housekeeping eventually arrived at almost 11pm,the young man informed us there were no pillows as the hotel was very busy and offered us just 1 towel even tho he had 2 more in his hand. There was also an issue regarding a discount voucher for use in the bar/restaurant(stated on hotels own website) when staying a friday or saturday night, which we were. We asked several times about this, eventually we had a reply from the beverages manager who denied knowledge of any such offer. We experienced various other difficulties and would not stay here again if in the area. The brand new Sunbury Travelodge just down the road at £29 a night is a much better optionThe saving grace of this hotel is its pleasant and(mostly) helpful staff.

Myself and my business colleagues have the misfortune to stay at this hotel several times a year. On repeated visits there has ALWAYS been some problem with the room,or reservation or property itself. I have requested non-smoking rooms, then been put in an allegedly non-smoking room on a smoking corridor where fumes waft through under the doors and vents, or rooms where there is still a smell of smoke in the furnishings. Most visits I have been forced to ask for a change of rooms -sometime multiple times (for example room on the 3rd floor had a great damp patch on the ceiling and bedding felt damp). I have been overbilled when doing an advance purchase rate, too high a daily rate put through my credit card account a month before I arrived, no apology on check in when I noticed the error. On another trip all the public areas reeked of sewage (problem with the river outside, drains? who knows). One trip, housekeeping staff decided to pack some of my damp laundry away in my suitcase - completely inappropriate to open guest luggage to do that. Front desk staff tend to be superficially charming and smooth, but actually unhelpful and with a limited concept of customer service. No follow ups - no apologies - even when promised. They will give you the runaround, palm you off, when a reservation or room is a problem. I am also disappointed by the fact that female guests raising issues appear to be treated with less consideration than men. My male colleagues invariably get their concerns with rooms/billings resolved faster and more appropriately. On a service basis, this hotel should not be classed as 4 star. On the bright side breakfast is good, some of the morning waiting staff helpful and pleasant BUT time after time the fruit salad is winey tasting (I assume they just pour new on top of the old, so there is always some stale fruit mixed in with the fresh). Unfortunately there is a limited choice of hotels in the vicinity so sometimes there is no other choice, but buyer beware. I'm surprised that Holiday Inn and the local management doesn't appear to do anything to address problems with the operations of this hotel - guess they must feel it is a captive market. These issues have been a recurring feature of visits to this hotel several times each year since at least 2006.

Holiday Inn's are a fairly generic standard, and this is one of the better examples. It is a large hotel which seems to be geared towards business travellers and meetings (which was the purpose of my stay). Everything is functional and efficient, rooms are nice but not special, but it is a good place for a short business stay.

The location is nice, close to the river. Not very close to any other facilities, but I walked about 20 minutes into Lower Sunbury where there were nice pubs with great food. In July this was very pleasant, in January it might not be!!

The breakfast was OK with a good choice of food. I did not eat in the hotel apart from this.

Reception staff were helpful and pleasant.

Good location, semi-rural but fairly close to Heathrow.

Expensive (but this is London!!)

This is in a nice setting and the staff are very helpful. Green surroundings and an area you can walk in. The rooms were big and the bed was comfy, nice to see you had a pillow menu so could choose the type that suited you ! I wasn't that impressed with the buffet food, vegetarians had little option and there were no green veg with the hot food. Why do we have to pay for the wifi as well ?

  • Liked — The hotel location
  • Disliked — No shuttle bus so had to get taxi from station.

We booked a friday special rate before reading the reviews on this web site so we very concerned about what we would find. Happily we found the hotel to be very good. The room was very clean and in good condition. The staff were polite and helpful. We didn't eat in the restuarant so no comment on the food except breakfast which offered a good selection and was fine. The fitness centre is first rate with a lovely pool. The standard room rate is too high for the type of hotel; typical Holiday Inn in my experience, so make sure you get a discounted rate. The hotel is an ex Moat House Hotel but has been totally refurbished in the Holiday Inn style and is located in its own grounds. Transport is recommended as the hotel is a long way from local ammenities due to its secluded position. Recommended.

I have stayed in this hotel numerous times over the last 12 months (30+ times) as it's convenient for my office. It was sheer laziness that kept me going back. However, I've finally changed my frequent stays to the Holiday Inn, Chessington which is massively superior.

This hotel is very, very poor. The week day rates are expensive (£120-£170 depending on time of booking) for a hotel which is barely worthy of a *** rating.

The bathrooms are filthy. Broken tiles, pointless showers, gaps of up to 1/2 inch between bath and walls, grubby doors that you could write your name in. On one particularly memorable occasion there was so much hair in the bath plug hole that the water wouldn't run away. I rang down to reception and eventually a non-English speaking guy came to clear it, obviously very put out that I had complained to the manager. None of the cleaning staff appear to know how to actually clean. I felt uncomfortable walking on the carpet from the bathroom with bare feet, they are so dirty.

I usually take room service and the food is over-priced, bland and often just warm. In 12 months there hasn't been a change of menu.

I rarely had a room with operational heating/air con system (and believe me, I've stayed in most of them). Irons don't work (even after requesting a replacement). The TV aerials are hit and miss too, some of them just fall out if you move the TV to watch it at a different angle. One night my window wouldn't stay closed so I ended up having to put a chair on a table to push it closed. Just where are the maintenance staff in this place??

I had to smile at another reviewer mentioning the fire alarm going off in the middle of the night. We had an evacuation at 2.00 am one morning, we stood in the freezing carpark in our night clothes for over 30 minutes while staff struggled to understand the situation or what to do. Apparently, the same thing had happened the night before. Yet another false alarm! When this happened to me at a Hilton Hotel in London the staff were handing out silver blankets to keep us warm. With so many false alarms at this place why haven't they cottoned on to this?

In summary, I won't be staying here again unless I'm very, very desparate! Do yourself a favour and go somewhere else. The management haven't improved anything in a year so I doubt these issues are very high on their agenda.
