“Excellent base with delightful grounds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2013

This is an update to my previous review. This time we stayed in one of the Executive rooms, which are fairly new. The room was very nice indeed, big comfortable bed; 'fridge; coffee machine; lots of room and air conditioning. No bath, but a good shower with a detachable shower (for washing hair!).
The service and food were good, as ever. The Lensbury is undergoing alterations at the moment, but the landscaping of the grounds has been done very attractively and the work did not interfere with our enjoyment.

Lensbury hotel
Directions - relatively easy to get, but you'll need your map and directions as it is a fair way off the main artery roads. If you arriving by train, then get a dab or call the hotel, as their free collection/drop off service maybe running.
Parking - plenty of it.
Staff - friendly, polite and helpful.
Conference centre - they have also tagged on a conference centre. Oddly we walked into it (getting the free taxi) and saw a member of staff telling another member off - which was not appropriate.
Checkin and check out - very easy, as we had pre-booked. Although the hotel reception desk was quite small and simple compared to the building and a it of of place (I guess because of its history as a Shell Executive retreat).
Room - we'd upgraded to the delux room. Obviously it had been redecorated recently, as it was modern and had a fresh feel to it. Good strong shower. However what let it down was the tiles in the bathroom were stained and the grout mouldy. See the pictures. A little TLC on this, and the room would have been even better.
Restaurant - we ate in the casual dinning area (conservatory). It had good views onto the river and grounds and was an enjoyable space. The food was tasty even though the array was not huge. Breakfast was also good.
The pool and sauna - ok, so it is great to have one, but this really let the place down. Given all the nice stuff so far, this needs work. If you go in winter, take a coat, as you need to walk outside to get to it. Lockers are free. The pool is long, as is full of swimmers training and doing keep fit (they use it as a leisure club for non residents as well). It is not a pool to go and have a relax in after a busy day! It looks and feels like a 1960s local authority pool. The sauna and steam rooms for men and women are separate - this is so ridiculous these days, especially if you go with your partner and want to enjoy the whole experience together. They give you towels on arrival. The gym looked ok.
Overall - this building has a rich history and was good value for money, with some good features, views and location to the river. The free taxi ride to the station and back (at certain times) is also good. It could be improved so much, with just a little TLC and modernisation in parts.

Thank you for your review of The Lensbury following your recent stay with us. It is good to hear that you enjoyed your visit and found the whole experience good value for money. We accept that there are areas which need improvement and are currently working on a programme of refurbishment to the main bar, lounge and Mews block bedrooms. This work will be completed by the end of April, and we would urge you to visit us again then to see the improvements we have made.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.

Kind regards

Kathy Lambert

Great welcome, easy parking, terrific friendly, knowledgeable staff. Reception rooms and most of downstairs is pale wood which makes for a cosy ambience. Bedrooms on third floor have small windows, so need light on in the daytime, room 360 is right above the air conditioning plant (quite noisy) so cannot open windows at night but air conditioning in bedroom worked efficiently. Lovely room, clean & sparkling, huge bed, large bathroom with good shower & toiletries.
The Terrace dining room is a bit hectic with sporty children but there is an adult only space which is peaceful. Breakfast buffet extremely good & salad bar in evenings was enough for us & very good value. Had a look around the spar, very busy, but did not use it this time. Full size pool & most sports catered for, pool room in main hotel.
Walk to Richmond along the river in 1 hour, walk to Twickenham in 30 mins & Hampton Court in one & half hours, so great central place to be. Buses frequent, 14 miles from centre of London.
Really enjoyed our stay & will definitely be going back.

Room Tip: first or second floor for larger windows, back of hotel for river view.

Thank you for your review of The Lensbury following your recent visit. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and found your room to be comfortable and clean with good shower and toiletries too. The Lensbury has undergone a lot of refurbishment in recent years, and more is planned in order to upgrade our restaurant and bar areas soon. I know that you found the dining experience a bit noisy and hectic but this will be addressed in the forthcoming improvements, so I hope you will come back to stay with us again when the work has been completed to experience the difference.
We are proud of our excellent leisure facilities at The Lensbury which are extensive and feature pool, gym, tennis courts and spa as well as a watersports centre. Our location, based on the river also makes it a good base for walks along the towpath to Richmond or Kingston as you did.
Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback, which is much appreciated. We hope you will come back and stay at The Lensbury again soon.

I stayed for one night with friends and it was dark by the time we checked in. I had a standard single room and was very pleased to see that the single bed was much bigger than you normally get in Hotels, probably 3' 6" wide. My room was at the end of a corridor. After a good night's sleep I woke in the daylight and noticed one or two housekeeping issues in the room. It was though the room had not been "finished" by the Housekeeping Team. After a lovely breakfast in the smart dining room, I checked out and mentioned these issues to Reception. They could not have been more apologetic and refused to take any payment until they had investigated my claims. They advised they would contact me within 24 hours and that is exactly what they did. I was not charged anything for my stay. I had not expected this and that is my point. There was an issue and as soon as they knew about it, swift action was taken to resolve it and this exceeded any expectations of mine. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room in the Main Hotel

The Lensbury looks so grand on the exterior, so it's a little disappointing when you enter the main reception which is tiny and packed if there's more than a few people. However, the staff are friendly and welcoming.

Room was a nice double and kids room was next door, but their room was a little on the small side. Shower not adjustable which for a 6 feet plus is not ideal.

Breakfast was buffet style, but excellent quality. In fact, it was one of the best hotel breakfasts I've had in a long time - plenty of selection, good quality produce and piping hot. The dining area is pleasant, and looks out onto the Thames and gardens.

The hotel is well located for nearby Teddington, but would be too far to walk with luggage, so taxi or driving is recommended. There's ample free parking space at the hotel.

Thank you for your review of The Lensbury following your stay with us in November. We are delighted to hear that you found the staff to be friendly and welcoming and the breakfast one of the best you've experienced. We are fortunate in our location too, on the banks of the river Thames with pleasant grounds and gardens next to Teddington Lock. It is an ideal base for visiting Hampton Court, Richmond and Kingston, with a tow path along the river bank for a pleasant walk. The bedrooms at The Lensbury have all been refurbished fairly recently so they are all clean and comfortable with fresh decor. Some are a little on the small side compared with other hotels, but perfectly adequate for a pleasant stay.

You may be interested to learn that we will be undergoing a refurbishment of our ground floor reception, bar and loung areas in the New Year and so the small reception area you refer to will be completely transformed.
Thank you again for passing on your feedback, it is important for us and helps us to improve. Please come back and stay at The Lensbury again soon.

We booked this hotel for one night as we were attending a family celebration nearby. Our accommodation was in the Mews as there were no rooms available in the main hotel. On arrival we were checked in at the reception by a nice young lady but unfortunately we were unable to understand her very well, however we made our way out to the Mews building and found our room on the top floor, on opening the door we were so disappointed as the room looked tired and drab. There were staines on the carpet and also some on one of the bed throws. The furniture was very dated and cheap looking and bathroom very small with hardly any room to put ones toiletries.

On the plus side there were tea & coffee making facilities and the twin beds were wide ones but the pillows were hard slabs of something very uncomfortable and worst of all mine smelled sweaty which was unpleasant.
If I had been staying any longer than one night I would have complained and asked to be moved as for a few pounds short of £200 a room we expected much better. We have stayed in better rooms in the former Eastern Block hotels, in fact we may as well have stayed at the nearby Travel Lodge for far less money and I am sure the rooms would have been no worse.

In the main hotel building there were photos of sporting personalities who had stayed there including various Wimbledon Champions, one thing I am sure of is that they would not have been given the room that we were allocated. It may be that the rooms in the main building are more up to date so I cannot comment on them.

I like to give credit where due and we found the staff to be very pleasant & helpful even though some were difficult to understand.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 636 in the Mews Drab, dated, stained carpets and tiny bathroom.

Thank you for your review of The Lensbury following your recent stay. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your accommodation in the Mews. Many of our guests do actually prefer to stay in these rooms as they are quieter than the main building and offer direct access to our leisure facilities, along with complimentary self-service laundry facilities and a separate lounge area.

At The Lensbury we pride ourselves on a five year rolling refurbishment programme and invest a vast amount of money into the 171 rooms that we have. By the end of April all of our rooms, including the Mews, will have been refurbished within the last three years.

I hope that you will return to experience the extensive refurbishments in the near future.

All of our housekeeping items should be of a high standard, and we would encourage any guests to call the 24 hour reception for a replacement of any items that do not meet this standard.

All feedback is valuable and helps us improve our offering to our guests, so thank you for taking the time to submit your comments.
