If I was writing this just for the room it would get 2 out of 5.
If you're staying a few nights and get given a key for room 12 I would suggest rejecting it before you go upstairs. If you're only staying the night like we did and you're not afraid of cracked walls and ceiling and not too picky you'll be fine. It looked like the room that the hotel inspector refused to stay in. Full of mould, damp, cracked bath, cracked window etc. The bed was clean, bathroom and towels reasonably clean but there was leftover butter in the fridge from a previous guest.
Food is very nice, drinks overpriced at £3.50 for the cheapest pint. Staff were very friendly from the moment we walked in and throughout our stay. It was nice to have a large beer garden and plenty of tables under shelter if it's raining or you need some shade.
Don't go through the reception side (to the right) on arrival as there is never anyone there and you could be waiting around for a while. Go to the left and tell someone at the bar you've arrived.
